In this study, C(sp(2))-H borylation of arenes was accomplished by a nickel catalyst, resulting in good yield. Alkyl and alkoxy arenes were successfully functionalized, affording C(sp(2))-H borylated compounds. It was unraveled that the well-defined abnormal N-heterocyclic carbene based Ni(II) complex breaks into Ni nanoparticles (Ni-NPs), which act as catalytically active species. A series of controlled reactions under stoichiometric conditions along with spectroscopic studies and single-crystal X-ray crystallographic study helped us to understand the formation of Ni-NPs along with formation of a boron(III) compound during this reaction.

Totally colorless, transparent, and highly refractive poly(phenylene thioether ether)s (PPTEs) containing thianthrene-2,7-disulfanyl moiety were developed in this study. A new 4,4′-diol aromatic compound, 2,7-(4,4′-diphenol)thiothianthrene (DPTT), with a high sulfur content was designed and synthesized to develop polymers with high refractive indices and high thermal stabilities. The PPTEs were prepared by polycondensation of DPTT with organic dihalogen compounds, such as 2,6-difluorobenzonitrile (DFBN) and 4,6-dichloro-2-(methylthio) pyrimidine (DCMP). The obtained polymers showed good thermal stabilities such as relatively high glass transition temperatures (T(g)s) in the range of 153-176 degrees C and 5% weight loss temperatures (T-5%) over 344 degrees C. The cut-off wavelengths (lambda(0)) of the PPTE films are shorter than 343 nm, and they have a transmittance higher than 93% at 550 nm. The combination of the pyrimidine and high sulfur-containing thianthrene derivatives provides the PPTEs with a high refractive index of 1.7204 and a small birefringence of 0.0106 at 637 nm.

An air-stable mu-oxo-bridged binuclear Lewis acid of titanium(IV) salophen perfluorobutanesulfonate [{Ti(salophen)H2O)(2)O][OSO2C4F9](2) (1) was successfully synthesized by the reaction of Ti-IV(salophen)Cl-2 with AgOSO2C4F9 and characterized by techniques such as IR, NMR and HRMS. A series of novel sulfide derivatives containing 1,3,4-oxadiazole and pyridine were synthesized, characterized, and tested for their antibacterial activity against tobacco bacterial wilt and rice bacterial blight and for insecticidal activity toward diamondback moth. The results showed that some compounds had good insecticidal and bactericidal activity, e.g., the activities of compounds 6e and 6g-6j toward tobacco bacterial wilt were much better than those of commercial thiodiazole-copper, and some of the synthesized compounds possessed good insecticidal activity against Plutella xylostella. Nrf2 is a transcription factor regulating expression of the Phase II Antioxidant Response and plays an important role in neuroprotection and detoxification. Nrf2 activation is inhibited by interaction with Keap1. Covalent Keap1 inhibitors such as dimethyl fumarate (DMF) and RTA-408 are either on the market or in late stage clinical trials which implies potential benefit of Nrf2 activation. Activation of Nrf2 by disrupting Nrf2-Keap1 interaction through a non-covalent small molecule is an attractive approach with the promise of greater selectivity. However, there are no known non-covalent Nrf2 activators with acceptable pharmacokinetic properties to test the hypothesis in vivo. Based on our early reported work, using structural-based design, followed by extensive SAR exploration, we have identified a novel series of non-covalent Nrf2 activators, with sub-nanomolar binding affinity on Keap1 and single digit nanomolar activity in an astrocyte assay. A representative analog shows excellent oral PK and good Nrf2-dependent gene inductions in kidney. These results provide a peripheral in vivo tool compound to validate the biology of non-covalent activation of Nrf2.

Abundant aromatic carboxylic acids exist in great structural diversity from nature and synthesis. To date, the synthetically valuable decarboxylative functionalization of benzoic acids is realized mainly by transition-metal-catalyzed decarboxylative cross couplings. However, the high activation barrier for thermal decarboxylative carbometalation that often requires 140 degrees C reaction temperature limits both the substrate scope as well as the scope of suitable reactions that can sustain such conditions. Numerous reactions, for example, decarboxylative fluorination that is well developed for aliphatic carboxylic acids, are out of reach for the aromatic counterparts with current reaction chemistry. Here, we report a conceptually different approach through a low-barrier photoinduced ligand to metal charge transfer (LMCT)-enabled radical decarboxylative carbometalation strategy, which generates a putative high-valent arylcopper(III) complex, from which versatile facile reductive eliminations can occur. We demonstrate the suitability of our new approach to address previously unrealized general decarboxylative fluorination of benzoic acids.
