This study reported a stereoselective synthesis of (+)/(+)-pentenomycin I in 4-5 steps through regioselective silylation, optical resolution and dihydroxylation, followed by an olefin formation, from a known racemic cyclopentenone prepared from 2-deoxy-o-glucose. We also accomplished the transformation of a common intermediate into a variety of analogs. In addition, the antimicrobial activities of the pentenomycin analogs were evaluated, which revealed important structural factors of pentenomycins for the antimicrobial activities. In subsurface bioremediation, electron donor addition promotes microbial Fe(lII)-oxide mineral reduction that could change soil pore structure, release colloids, and alter soil surface properties. These processes in turn may impact bioremediation rates and the ultimate fate of contaminants. Columns packed with water-stable, Fe-oxide-rich soil aggregates were infused with acetate-containing artificial groundwater and operated for 20 d or 60 d inside an anoxic chamber. Soluble Fe(II) and soil colloids were detected in the effluent within one week after initiation of the acetate addition, demonstrating Fe(III)-bioreduction and colloid formation. Diffusible Br-, less diffusible 2,6-difluorobenzoate (DFBA), and non-diffusible silica-shelled silver nanoparticles (SSSNP) were used as tracers in transport experiments before and after the bioreduction. The transport of Br- was not influenced by the bioreduction. DFBA showed earlier breakthrough and less tailing after the bioreduction, suggesting alterations in flow paths and soil surface chemistry during the 20-d bioreduction treatment. Similarly, the bioreduction increased the transport of SSSNP very significantly, with mass recovery increasing from 1.7% to 25.1%. Unexpectedly, the SSSNP was completely retained in the columns when the acetate injection was extended from 20 to 60 d, while the mass recovery of DFBA decreased from 89.1% to 84.1% and Br showed no change. The large change in the transport of SSSNP was attributed to soil aggregate breakdown and colloid release (causing mechanical straining of SSSNP) and the exposure of iron oxide surfaces previously unavailable within aggregate interiors (facilitating attachment of SSSNP). These results suggest a time dependent fashion of microbial effect on the transport of diffusivity-varying tracers. (C) 2018 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

A new protocol for the chemoselective aromatization of tetrahydro-beta-carboline-3-carboxylic acids to direct biomimetic one step synthesis of beta-carboline-3-carboxylic acids 2 A-L using catalytic amount of I-2 in DMSO/H+ produces very good yield. This method was also successfully extended for the aromatization of tetrahydro-beta-carboline-3-methyl esters 5 A-G as well as one-step synthesis of Marinacarbolines-D analog, respectively. An efficient and facile method has been developed for the synthesis of alkyl bromides from various alcohols under mild conditions using a triphenylphosphine (PPh3)/1,2-dibromotetrachloroethane (DBTCE) complex in excellent yields and very short time (5 min). This method can also be applied for the transformation of chiral alcohols to their corresponding bromides in very high enantiomeric excess. The PPh3/DBTCE complex is also successfully applied to ring-opening reactions of cyclic ethers in mild conditions. Esterification, amidation, and formation of acid anhydrides under very mild experimental conditions are also successfully accomplished by following a modification of the Appel reaction protocol in this work.

A multi-gram-scale synthetic route to a novel, bifunctional normorphan 3D building block bearing orthogonally reactive vinyl MIDA boronate and N-2,4-dimethoxybenzyl (DMB) amide functional handles has been developed. Synthetic manipulation at each of the functional handles has been demonstrated including Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling, exo-diastereoselective hydrogenation, N-DMB group removal and lactam reduction. Normorphan cores derived from the building block satisfied AstraZeneca’s ‘rule of 2’ for building blocks and had a high fraction of sp(3) hybridised carbon atoms (Fsp(3)). A virtual lead-like library of 344 compounds derived from the building block had attractive lead-like properties.
