A series of five bis(salicylaldehydes), including four isomeric compounds based on a benzene scaffold and a closely related naphthalene derivative, were investigated in order to elucidate the impact of resonance effects and intramolecular hydrogen bonds (HBs) on the macroscopic properties of these systems. Density functional theory (DFT) computations revealed important differences between isomers on the molecular level, which was reflected in different charge distributions, aromatic C-C bond orders, and aromaticity characters. The consequences of these features were evidenced by the UV-vis absorption spectra: for 1,3-diformyl-4,6-dihydroxybenzene (2), the longest wavelength absorption band is observed at 285 nm, while its isomers 1,4-diformyl-2,5-dihydroxybenzene (1), 1,4-diformyl-2,3-dihydroxybenzene (3), and 1,2-diformyl-3,6-dihydroxybenzene (4) are characterized by absorption in the visible range (379-407 nm). The specificity of 2 results from simultaneous lowering and elevation of HOMO and LUMO energy levels, respectively. We have found that the HOMO/LUMO energy variations follow trends observed in isomeric dihydroxybenzenes (HOMO) and phthalaldehydes (LUMO), and these effects operate separately to some extent. Furthermore, theoretical calculations indicate that the UV-vis spectral properties of bis(salicylaldehydes) are directly transferable to the corresponding bis(salicylaldimines) and their boron complexes. Finally, the influence of structural and molecular stabilization effects was analyzed by means of X-ray structural analysis and periodic DFT computations.

A newly synthesized ligand derived from 2-amino thiophenol and benzoic anhydride and its Co(II), Cd(II), La(III) (in bulk and nano size), and Gd(III) complexes was investigated and characterized. The maximum elimination capacity of the newly synthesized ligand was investigated towards the removal of Co(II), Cd(II), La(III), and Gd(III) ions from aqueous solutions. It was found that the ligand has the best removal ability for Cd(II) metal of 98.66% at a concentration of 0.03 mg/L.

We recently reported a new class of chiral ruthenium catalysts in which two achiral bidentate N-(2-pyridyl)-substituted N-heterocyclic carbene ligands in addition to two labile acetonitriles are coordinated to a central ruthenium and generate a stereogenic metal center which is responsible for the overall chirality (Zheng et al. J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2017, 139, 4322). Here we now report our discovery of related chiral-at-ruthenium catalysts in which normal and abnormal N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) ligands are present at the same time. The synthesis of racemic complexes, their resolution into individual enantiomers by a chiral auxiliary approach, and a catalytic application are reported. The mixed normal/abnormal NHC complexes display significantly increased turnover numbers and turnover frequencies for a nitrene-mediated enantioselective C(sp(3))-H amination.

A straightforward and broad-scope procedure to obtain symmetrically substituted buta-1,3-diene-1,4-diyl diesters, based on the homocoupling of the corresponding (Z)-beta-iodoenol esters, is presented. It involves the use of a catalytic system composed of [NiCl2(PPh3)(2)] (10 mol%), NaI (10 mol%), and excess of Zn dust. The reactions proceed in THF at room temperature with exquisite preservation of the stereochemistry of the C=C bond of the starting iodoolefins, thus leading to the final dienes as the correspondingZ,Z-stereoisomers exclusively.

The first successful example of deacylative annulation of 1,3-diones with sulfoxonium ylides was achieved through Ru(ii)-catalyzed C-C bond activation. The excellent chemoselectivity and broad substrate scope render this method a practical and versatile approach for the preparation of (hetero)aryl and alkenyl substituted furans, which are valuable units in many biologically active compounds and functional materials. We report a new system for the silylation of aryl C-H bonds. The combination of [Ir(cod)(OMe)](2) and 2,9-Me-2-phenanthroline (2,9-Me-2-phen) catalyzes the silylation of arenes at lower temperatures and with faster rates than those reported previously, when the hydrogen byproduct is removed, and with high functional group tolerance and regioselectivity. Inhibition of reactions by the H-2 byproduct is shown to limit the silylation of aryl C-H bonds in the presence of the most active catalysts, thereby masking their high activity. Analysis of initial rates uncovered the high reactivity of the catalyst containing the sterically hindered 2,9-Me-2-phen ligand but accompanying rapid inhibition by hydrogen. With this catalyst, under a flow of nitrogen to remove hydrogen, electron-rich arenes, including those containing sensitive functional groups, undergo silylation in high yield for the first time, and arenes that underwent silylation with prior catalysts react over much shorter times with lower catalyst loadings. The synthetic value of this methodology is demonstrated by the preparation of key intermediates in the synthesis of medicinally important compounds in concise sequences comprising silylation and functionalization. Mechanistic studies demonstrate that the cleavage of the aryl C-H bond is reversible and that the higher rates observed with the 2,9-Me-2-phen ligand are due to a more thermodynamically favorable oxidative addition of aryl C-H bonds.

Experimental solubilities have been determined by spectrophotometric methods for 1-chloro-4-bromobenzene, 1,4-dibromobenzene, 1,4-dichloro-2-nitrobenzene, benzoic acid, 4-nitrobenzoic acid, 3,5-dinitrobenzoic acid, 2-methoxybenzoic acid, 4-methoxybenzoic acid, 3-chlorobenzoic acid, 3,5-dinitro-2-methylbenzoic acid, 2-methylbenzoic acid, 3-methylbenzoic acid, 3,4-dichlorobenzoic acid, benzoin, 4-tert-butylbenzoic acid, 4-chlorobenzoic acid, 3,4-dimethoxybenzoic acid, 3,4,5-trimethoxybenzoic acid and o-acetoacetaniside dissolved in 2-ethyl-1-hexanol at 298.15 K. Our experimental measurements, combined with published solubility data retrieved from the published chemical and engineering literature, were used to derive Abraham model correlations for solute transfer into 2-ethyl-1-hexanol from both water and from the gas phase. The derived Abraham model correlations were found to back-calculate the measured experimental values to within +/- 0.12 log units (or less).

Metal single-atom catalysts (SACs) promise great rewards in terms of metal atom efficiency. However, the requirement of particular conditions and supports for their synthesis, together with the need of solvents and additives for catalytic implementation, often precludes their use under industrially viable conditions. Here, we show that palladium single atoms are spontaneously formed after dissolving tiny amounts of palladium salts in neat benzyl alcohols, to catalyze their direct aerobic oxidation to benzoic acids without ligands, additives, or solvents. With this result in hand, the gram-scale preparation and stabilization of Pd SACs within the functional channels of a novel methyl-cysteine-based metal-organic framework (MOF) was accomplished, to give a robust and crystalline solid catalyst fully characterized with the help of single-crystal X-ray diffraction (SCXRD). These results illustrate the advantages of metal speciation in ligand-free homogeneous organic reactions and the translation into solid catalysts for potential industrial implementation.

The studies culminating in the synthesis of two large subunits of tautomycetin are described. The first one, fragment C1-C12 that has an anti-1,3-dimethyl system and a terminal diene unit, was accomplished in 10 linear steps in 7.4% overall yield. The second one, fragment C13-C25 which bears the sensitive anhydride framework and the majority of the stereogenic centers, was prepared in 13 linear steps (longest sequence) in 8% overall yield. Among the key transformations used, a regioselective epoxide opening, a Pd-catalyzed addition of terminal alkyne to acceptor alkyne, a Mukaiyama aldol reaction, a Yamaguchi esterification, and a homemade mild di-esterification can be cited. The chosen strategies allowed good yields, stereoselectivity, reproducibility, and scalability for several important intermediates.
