We show that alpha v beta 1 activity is embedded in a range of published alpha 4 beta 1 (VLA-4) ligands; we also demonstrate how a non-RGD integrin inhibitor (of alpha 4 beta 1 in this case) was converted into a potent non-zwitterionic RGD integrin inhibitor (of alpha v beta 1 in this case). We designed urea ligands with excellent selectivity over alpha 4 beta 1 and the other alpha v integrins (alpha v beta 3, alpha v beta 5, alpha v beta 6, alpha v beta 8). In silico docking models and density functional theory (DFT) calculations aided the discovery of the lead urea series.

This study reports a simple process to synthesize and separate of 2-(substituted-phenyl) benzimidazole derivatives with high yield and efficiency. Specifically, by reacting ortho-phenylenediamines with benzaldehydes using sodium metabisulphite as an oxidation agent in a mixture of solvent under mild condition, twenty-three compounds of benzimidazoles were obtained and separated easily using hexane and water to wash, respectively. The structure of all obtained compounds was identified by FTIR, NMR and HRMS. The SAR analysis of synthesized benzimidazoles on human lung (A549), breast (MDA-MB-231) and prostate (PC3) cancer cell lines showed that the presence of methyl group at 5(6)-position on benzimidazole scaffold was a contributing factor influencing the anticancer activity. The presence of electron-donating groups (OH, OMe, -NMe2, -O-CH2-C6H5) also caused significant increase of anticancer activity, while the presence of electron-withdrawing groups (-NO2, -CF3) on the phenyl group at 2-position of benzimidazole ring decreased the ability of inhibition of synthesized benzimidazoles. The compounds 2f and 2g displayed the significant anticancer activity on both A549 and PC3 cell lines.

A simple and efficient methodology for Friedel-Crafts acylation of 3-methylindole using Amberlyst 15 resin as catalyst is described. This methodology shows good selectivity towards the formation of the products of 2-acylation, (3-methyl-1H-indol-2-yl)ketones. Several advantages can be ascribed to Amberlyst 15, among them; are the ease of handling, quick separation from the reaction mixture and minimum or no production of the chemical residues that must be eliminated. Besides, the catalyst can be easily recycled and reused with a minimal loss in activity through 6 reaction cycles. The catalyst was characterized by FT-IR spectroscopy and superficial acidity.

Microplastics (MPs) and nanoplastics (NPs) are ubiquitous and contaminate soil, surface waters, atmospheric aerosol, precipitations, indoor and outdoor environments. However, the occurrence, transformation and fate of NPs in the environment are still unclear. In this work, polystyrene nanoparticles (PS-NPs) are used as a proxy of NPs to study their reactivity and potential impact on atmospheric and surface waters. In particular, the reactivity with hydroxyl radicals (center dot OH) in the aqueous phase is investigated. For the first time, a reactivity constant for the reaction of NPs with center dot OH is measured, strongly dependent on the exposed partide surface area of NPs. Degradation products (short chain carboxylic acids and aromatic compounds), obtained by direct and center dot OH-mediated photolysis of PS-NPs suspensions, are identified by mass spectrometry. Irradiation of a PS-NPs suspension under natural sunlight for 1 year has shown the formation of formic acid and organic compounds similar to those found in riverine and cloud dissolved organic matter, which could contribute significantly to the dissolved organic matter in the aqueous phase.
