The development of carbonaceous materials as metal-free catalysts integrating different types of catalysis in a single system represents a significant advance in cascade/tandem organic synthesis. Zero-dimensional carbon dots with tuneable optical properties and easily modifiable surface functionalities can be harnessed as a carbocatalyst for merging photooxidation and acid-catalyzed reactions in one pot. Herein, we explore carbon dots decorated with hydrogen sulfate groups as a photocatalyst for the dehydrogenative cross-coupling of xanthenes with ketones, arenes and 1,3-dicarbonyl compounds that showed high efficiency and selectivity under visible-light irradiation. The sulphated carbon dots demonstrate dual catalytic properties, wherein they induced the rapid photooxidation of xanthenes in the presence of molecular oxygen to form a hydroperoxy intermediate followed by coupling of nucleophiles catalysed by the acidic surface functional groups. The methodology represents an operationally simple pathway for the generation of C-C coupling products in a short reaction time with wide substrate scopes under mild conditions. The catalyst is easily separable and can be reused over multiple cycles with good efficiency.

Traditional cross-coupling reactions show some disadvantages like the use of organohalides or the production of stoichiometric amounts of waste. The dehydrative homo- or heterocoupling of alcohols therefore arises as an interesting approach for a highly atom-economical formation of carbon-carbon bonds, since water is produced as the only by-product. We herein report a simple and direct, metal-free protocol for the synthesis of olefins by applying catalytic amounts of a sulfonic acid and triphenylphosphane under air. A variety of olefins could be synthesized from benzylic alcohols under relatively mild conditions. Additionally, dehydrative hydroarylation of benzylic alcohols with electron-rich arenes was possible by using only Bronsted acid under otherwise same reaction conditions. We could show that phosphane additives are essential to overcome oligomerization as main side reaction by the occupancy of the reactive carbocation intermediate.

The geometry changes of two rotamers of 1,3-dimethoxybenzene were determined from a combined fit of line intensities in fluorescence emission spectra, obtained via pumping different vibronic transition and the changes of rotational constants upon electronic excitation. The so determined changes are compared to the results of ab initio approximate coupled cluster singles and doubles (CC2) calculations. The bond length variations in the aromatic ring follow the calculated electron density differences from the coupled cluster wavefunctions and are in agreement with excitation to an L-1(b)-state for the C-2v symmetric B-conformer. We synthesized two kinds of monocarbamothioates TZO(R) containing a thiazolidin-2-one (TZO) skeleton and TZD(R) containing a thiazolidine-2,4-dione (TZD) skeleton. In the reaction of TZO(R) and phenoxypropyrenesulfide (PPS) using tetrabutylammonium chloride (TBAC) as a catalyst in 1-methyl-2-pyrrolidinone at 60 degrees C, anionic ring-opening polymerization of PPS proceeded to give the corresponding linear polysulfides, polyPPS, with M-n = 75 860-206 700 (M-w/M-n = 1.54-1.73) in high yield. In contrast, in the reaction of TZD(R) and PPS, the continuous insertion reaction of PPS into TZD(R), i.e., living ring-expansion polymerization, occurred to afford cyclic polysulfides TZD(R)-c-poly(PPS)(n) with M-n = 1870-33 420 (M-w/M-n = 1.07-1.26) in high yield. The ring size could be controlled by the feed ratio of TZD(R)/PPS in the range of 1/5-1/100.

The aim of the study presented was a comprehensive analysis of catalytic performance of palladium and platinum catalysts (1 or 3 wt% relative to the support), on SBA-16, in hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) of chemical compounds generated in biomass processing (anisole, 4-methylanisole and 1,3-dimethoxybenzene). HDO of these compounds was carried out in a high pressure reactor for 4 h in temperatures from 90 to 130 degrees C and under hydrogen pressure of 25-60 bar. The catalytic performance of palladium and platinum modified materials was found to differ considerably. The SBA-16 supported catalyst modified with palladium permitted getting high conversion of the model molecules studied (often 100%), while those modified with platinum showed higher selectivity to the compounds with no oxygen atom in their structures, which allowed a significant reduction of the O/C ratio. Direct impact of the process conditions (temperature, pressure) on the degree of conversion and selectivity of the HDO process was established and characterized.

Background: Current cancer mortality figures are important for disease management and resource allocation. We estimated mortality counts and rates for 2020 in the European Union (EU) and for its six most populous countries. Materials and methods: We obtained cancer death certification and population data from the World Health Organization and Eurostat databases for 1970-2015. We estimated projections to 2020 for 10 major cancer sites plus all neoplasms and calculated the number of avoided deaths over 1989-2020. Results: Total cancer mortality rates in the EU are predicted to decline reaching 130.1/100 000 men (similar to 5.4% since 2015) and 82.2 in women (similar to 4.1%) in 2020. The predicted number of deaths will increase by 4.7% reaching 1 428 800 in 2020. In women, the upward lung cancer trend is predicted to continue with a rate in 2020 of 15.1/100 000 (higher than that for breast cancer, 13.5) while in men we predicted further falls. Pancreatic cancer rates are also increasing in women (+1.2%) but decreasing in men (similar to 1.9%). In the EU, the prostate cancer predicted rate is 10.0/100 000, declining by 7.1% since 2015; decreases for this neoplasm are similar to 8% at age 45-64, 14% at 65-74 and 75-84, and 6% at 85 and over. Poland is the only country with an increasing prostate cancer trend (+18%). Mortality rates for other cancers are predicted to decline further. Over 1989-2020, we estimated over 5 million avoided total cancer deaths and over 400 000 for prostate cancer. Conclusion: Cancer mortality predictions for 2020 in the EU are favourable with a greater decline in men. The number of deaths continue to rise due to population ageing. Due to the persistent amount of predicted lung (and other tobacco-related) cancer deaths, tobacco control remains a public health priority, especially for women. Favourable trends for prostate cancer are largely attributable to continuing therapeutic improvements along with early diagnosis.

To explore if the catalytic activity of single-metal species in halometallate catalysts can be enhanced with mixed-metal species, aluminum and gallium were simultaneously introduced to prepare a mixed-metal ionic liquid (IL) through a one pot reaction of [HN222]Cl, AlCl3, and GaCl3 in various amounts. The Lewis acidity in Friedel-Crafts acylation and alkylation reactions of these IL compositions were evaluated and all mixed-metal [HN222][xAlCl(3) + (2 – x)GaCl3]Cl ILs exhibited higher catalytic activity than AlCl3, GaCl3, [HN222][Al2Cl7], or [HN222][Ga2Cl7]. The broadening in Al-27 nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) of these ILs indicates the presence of dynamic anionic species, whereas matrix-assisted laser-desorption ionization time of-flight (MALDI-TOF) and acetonitrile-probed Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) analyses correlates the structure-activity relationship, for instance, identifying the presence of mixed-metal-containing [Cl2GaOClAlClOGaCl2](-) species in the better-performing ILs.
