The reaction of TMS-ethers of 2,4-diaryl-1,1,1-trifluorobut-3-en-2-ols with arenes in TfOH at room temperature for 5 min results in the formation of trans-/cis-1,3-diaryl-1-trifluoromethyl indanes in good yields (up to 99%). The predominant or exclusive formation of indanes with a trans-configuration of 1,3-diaryl groups has been observed. The reaction proceeds through an intermediate formation of the corresponding mesomeric CF3-allyl cations. A plausible reaction mechanism is discussed.

A molecular crystal of a 2-D hydrogen-bonded organic framework (HOF) undergoes an unusual structural transformation after solvent removal from the crystal pores during activation. The conformationally flexible host molecule, ABTPA, adapts its molecular conformation during activation to initiate a framework expansion. The microcrystalline activated phase was characterized by three-dimensional electron diffraction (3D ED), which revealed that ABTPA uses out-of-plane anthracene units as adaptive structural anchors. These units change orientation to generate an expanded, lower density framework material in the activated structure. The porous HOF, ABTPA-2, has robust dynamic porosity (SA(BET) = 1 183 m(2) g(-1)) and exhibits negative area thermal expansion. We use crystal structure prediction (CSP) to understand the underlying energetics behind the structural transformation and discuss the challenges facing CSP for such flexible molecules.

An investigation of the unexpected lability of the Csp(3)-Csp(2)bond connecting 2,4,6-trimethoxyphenyl group and an allylic moiety is carried out. We observed that the catalytic presence of either Lewis or Bronsted acid can render such 2,4,6-trimethoxyphenyl group labile. Several nucleophiles were found to substitute the labile C-C bond in mild reaction conditions resulting in very good yields of the allylated products. Even in the absence of a nucleophile, intramolecular cyclization of the parent substrate under acidic activation caused the labile C-C bond to cleave. A major motivation of this study is to understand the lability of electron-rich aryl group in acidic medium, employing 2,4,6-trimethoxyphenyl moiety as a case study. A plausible mechanism is proposed after carrying out several control reactions as well as UV/Vis and(1)H NMR spectroscopic studies. This work provides an insight into the activation of electron-rich arenes as a labile entity in acidic medium while also adding a conceptually novel C-C bond breaking approach to the vast literature of allylation of arenes.

A mild and regioselective method for the preparation of unsymmetrical biaryl sulfides using iron(III) catalysis is described. Activation of N-(arylthio)succinimides using the powerful Lewis acid iron(III) triflimide allowed the efficient thiolation of a range of arenes, including anisoles, phenols, acetanilides, and N-heterocycles. The method was applicable for the late-stage thiolation of tyrosine and tryptophan derivatives and was used as the key step for the synthesis of pharmaceutically relevant biaryl sulfur-containing compounds such as the antibiotic dapsone and the antidepressant vortioxetine. Kinetic studies revealed that while N-(arylthio)succinimides lbearing electron-deficient arenes underwent thioarylation catalyzed entirely by iron(III) triflimide, N-(arylthio)succinimides with electron-rich arenes displayed an autocatalytic mechanism promoted by the Lewis basic product.

Work previously published by our group described novel methodology for the synthesis of xanthones and related products from phenolic benzophenones in a reaction mediated by ceric ammonium sulfate (CAS). In this paper we further explore this novel reaction by subjecting an additional set of phenolic benzophenones to CAS to afford a range of compounds, including xanthones, 9H-xanthen-2,9(4aH)-diones, 3H-spiro[benzofuran-2,1′-cyclohexa[2,5]-diene]-3,4′-diones, and biaryl compounds. A comparison of these reactions with the more commonly used oxidant ceric ammonium nitrate (CAN) was also conducted. Based on these results, greater insight into the reaction mechanism has been gained. In addition, the conversion of the synthesized xanthen-2,9(4aH)-diones to xanthones by treatment with sodium dithionite is described.

Perovskite crystal grain size control, grain boundary passivation, and grain bridging are the keys to obtaining high efficiency in perovskite solar cells. A small amount of semi-conducting single-walled carbon nanotubes added to a perovskite active layer can achieve this. In particular, the surfactants attached to the semiconducting single-walled carbon nanotubes a crucial role. In this work, we synthesized a new surfactant, 4,6-di(anthracen-9-yl)-1,3-phenylene bis(dimethylcarbamate), which has a polyaromatic group on one end and a urea-analogue carbamate group on the other end. The polyaromatic anthracene end functions as a nanotweezer clenching the carbon nanotubes strongly via pi-pi interaction while the carbamate end interacts with Pb2+, functioning as a strong Lewis base. In addition, the new surfactant has conjugated double bonds with a suitable bandgap, resulting in enhanced charge mobility in the perovskite film. Overall, the new surfactant-clenched semiconducting carbon nanotubes showcase superior effectiveness as passivators and charge bridges in perovskite solar cells as compared to the conventional deoxycholate surfactant-wrapped semiconducting single-walled carbon nanotubes. The new surfactant-attached semiconducting carbon nanotube-added NH3CH3PbI3-based perovskite solar cells exhibited a power conversion efficiency of 20.7%, which is higher than that of the reference devices with no additives (18.4%) and the previously reported semiconducting single-walled carbon nanotube-added devices (19.7% in this work and 19.5% in the literature).

Background: Current cancer mortality figures are important for disease management and resource allocation. We estimated mortality counts and rates for 2020 in the European Union (EU) and for its six most populous countries. Materials and methods: We obtained cancer death certification and population data from the World Health Organization and Eurostat databases for 1970-2015. We estimated projections to 2020 for 10 major cancer sites plus all neoplasms and calculated the number of avoided deaths over 1989-2020. Results: Total cancer mortality rates in the EU are predicted to decline reaching 130.1/100 000 men (similar to 5.4% since 2015) and 82.2 in women (similar to 4.1%) in 2020. The predicted number of deaths will increase by 4.7% reaching 1 428 800 in 2020. In women, the upward lung cancer trend is predicted to continue with a rate in 2020 of 15.1/100 000 (higher than that for breast cancer, 13.5) while in men we predicted further falls. Pancreatic cancer rates are also increasing in women (+1.2%) but decreasing in men (similar to 1.9%). In the EU, the prostate cancer predicted rate is 10.0/100 000, declining by 7.1% since 2015; decreases for this neoplasm are similar to 8% at age 45-64, 14% at 65-74 and 75-84, and 6% at 85 and over. Poland is the only country with an increasing prostate cancer trend (+18%). Mortality rates for other cancers are predicted to decline further. Over 1989-2020, we estimated over 5 million avoided total cancer deaths and over 400 000 for prostate cancer. Conclusion: Cancer mortality predictions for 2020 in the EU are favourable with a greater decline in men. The number of deaths continue to rise due to population ageing. Due to the persistent amount of predicted lung (and other tobacco-related) cancer deaths, tobacco control remains a public health priority, especially for women. Favourable trends for prostate cancer are largely attributable to continuing therapeutic improvements along with early diagnosis.
