Sulfenylation of electron-rich arenes was carried out with N-unsubstituted sulfenamides in the presence of Bronsted or Lewis acids. alpha-Methylstyrene as an olefin was also sulfenylated with acidic sulfenamides, and a sulfur substituent was introduced on the methyl group. Intramolecular sulfenylation proceeded for allyl 2-sulfenamoylbenzoate derivatives, and sulfur containing seven-membered heterocycles were obtained.

Photoexcited electron-hole pairs on a semiconductor surface can engage in redox reactions with two different substrates. Similar to conventional electrosynthesis, the primary redox intermediates afford only separate oxidized and reduced products or, more rarely, combine to one addition product. Here, we report that a stable organic semiconductor material, mesoporous graphitic carbon nitride (mpg-CN), can act as a visible-light photoredox catalyst to orchestrate oxidative and reductive interfacial electron transfers to two different substrates in a two-or three-component system for direct twofold carbon-hydrogen functionalization of arenes and heteroarenes. The mpg-CN catalyst tolerates reactive radicals and strong nucleophiles, is straightforwardly recoverable by simple centrifugation of reaction mixtures, and is reusable for at least four catalytic transformations with conserved activity.

Here, we explore the GO-catalyzed cross-dehydrogenative coupling of oxindoles with arenes and thiophenols for the rapid synthesis of 3-aryloxindoles and 3-sulfenylated oxindoles. Control experiments and small-molecule mimicking studies reveal that the acidic nature and quinone-type functionalities of GO are synergistically utilized for the coupling reaction. The reaction proceeds under simple and mild reaction conditions, exhibits good functional group tolerance, and can be easily scaled up to the gram level.

Three-, four-, and five-component host/guest crystals with multi-color and white light emission is described. Our strategy is based on the confinement of aromatic donor guests in supramolecular acceptor hosts. The supramolecular acceptor hosts (NDI-TPFB) were composed of N,N’-dipyrid-3-yl-1,4,5,8- naphthalenediimide (NDI) with two tris(pentafluorophenyl) borane (TPFB) linked by boron-nitrogen dative bonds as Lewis acid-base pairs, which spontaneously formed upon mixing the components. In the first part, a set of three-component crystals with 14 different aromatic guests were characterized to elucidate the structure-property relationships. In the latter part, a series of 17 types of four-and fivecomponent crystals were formed with the use of binary or ternary guest inclusion systems, and their structural and photophysical properties were investigated. Among them, 14 types of crystals were formed effectively without destroying the crystal structure, as determined by X-ray diffraction and fluorescence microscopy. Notably, flexible color tuning, including white light emission, was realized by tuning the guest ratio and the combinations. Various intermolecular interactions such as C-H center dot center dot center dot F interactions, pi-pi stacking, charge-transfer interactions, and inclusion phenomena were important for forming the crystals. This approach that yields a rational solution of multicomponent crystals could be potentially useful for obtaining novel photofunctional solid-state systems.

The organocatalytic enantio- and diastereoselective cycloetherification of 1,3-cyclohexanedione-bearing enones involving the in situ generation of chiral cyanohydrins was developed. This transformation offers the first catalytic asymmetric approach to oxadecalin derivatives containing contiguous tetrasubstituted chiral carbons at the bridge heads of the fused ring systems. Depending on substituents, both cis- and trans-decalin-type scaffolds were synthesized with good to excellent stereoselectivities, and a range of functional groups accumulated on the chiral quaternary carbon moieties of the trans-oxadecalin derivatives.

We successfully demonstrated that Friedel-Crafts-type allylation of phenol derivatives and allylic phosphates is catalyzed by the AgTFA/trimethylsilyl cyanide (Me3SiCN) and Pd(OAc)(2)/Me3SiCN combined systems to afford the C-allylated product in a highly regioselective manner. The corresponding silyl cyanometallates generated in situ are proposed to be the active catalytic species. Lewis acidity of the reversibly formed ion pairs is appropriately regulated for this reaction. The para-allylated anisole and phenol derivatives are selectively obtained. The para-substituted ones are converted to the ortho-allylated products. The reactivity of the catalytic systems is strongly dependent on the electronic nature of both electrophile and nucleophile. Substitution of an aromatic ring on the allylic phosphate is essential for the reaction. Thus, the competitive reaction of a 1 : 1 mixture of cinnamyl and simple allyl phosphates affords only the cinnamyl-substituted product.

Cross-coupling reactions have developed into powerful approaches for carbon-carbon bond formation. In this work, a Ni-catalyzed migratory Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling featuring high benzylic or allylic selectivity has been developed. With this method, unactivated alkyl electrophiles and aryl or vinyl boronic acids can be efficiently transferred to diarylalkane or allylbenzene derivatives under mild conditions. Importantly, unactivated alkyl chlorides can also be successfully used as the coupling partners. To demonstrate the applicability of this method, we showcase that this strategy can serve as a platform for the synthesis of terminal, partially deuterium-labeled molecules from readily accessible starting materials. Experimental studies suggest that migratory cross-coupling products are generated from Ni(0/II) catalytic cycle. Theoretical calculations indicate that the chain-walking occurs at a neutral nickel complex rather than a cationic one. In addition, the original-site cross-coupling products can be obtained by alternating the ligand, wherein the formation of the products has been rationalized by a radical chain process.
