Microplastics (MPs) and nanoplastics (NPs) are ubiquitous and contaminate soil, surface waters, atmospheric aerosol, precipitations, indoor and outdoor environments. However, the occurrence, transformation and fate of NPs in the environment are still unclear. In this work, polystyrene nanoparticles (PS-NPs) are used as a proxy of NPs to study their reactivity and potential impact on atmospheric and surface waters. In particular, the reactivity with hydroxyl radicals (center dot OH) in the aqueous phase is investigated. For the first time, a reactivity constant for the reaction of NPs with center dot OH is measured, strongly dependent on the exposed partide surface area of NPs. Degradation products (short chain carboxylic acids and aromatic compounds), obtained by direct and center dot OH-mediated photolysis of PS-NPs suspensions, are identified by mass spectrometry. Irradiation of a PS-NPs suspension under natural sunlight for 1 year has shown the formation of formic acid and organic compounds similar to those found in riverine and cloud dissolved organic matter, which could contribute significantly to the dissolved organic matter in the aqueous phase. The direct reduction of carboxylic acids to aldehydes is a fundamental transformation in organic synthesis. The combination of an air-stable Ni precatalyst, dimethyl dicarbonate as an activator, and silane reductant effects this reduction for a wide variety of substrates, including pharmaceutically relevant structures, in good yields and with no overreduction to alcohols. Moreover, this methodology is scalable, allows access to deuterated aldehydes, and is also compatible with one-pot utilization of the aldehyde products.

After the last epidemic of the Zika virus (ZIKV) in Brazil that peaked in 2016, growing evidence has been demonstrated of the link between this teratogenic flavivirus and microcephaly cases. However, no vaccine or antiviral drug has been approved yet. ZIKV and Dengue viruses (DENV) entry to the host cell takes place through several receptors, including dendritic cell-specific intercellular adhesion molecule3-grabbing nonintegrin (DC-SIGN), so that the blockade of this receptor through multivalent glycoconjugates supposes a promising biological target to inhibit the infection process. In order to get enhanced multivalency in biocompatible systems, tridecafullerenes appended with up to 360 1,2-mannobiosides have been synthesized using a strain-promoted cycloaddition of azides to alkynes (SPAAC) strategy. These systems have been tested against ZIKV and DENV infection, showing an outstanding activity in the picomolar range.

A polystyrene-immobilized isothiourea has been applied to the enantioselective acylative kinetic resolution (KR) of monoacylated BINOL(s) with inexpensive isobutyric anhydride in batch and flow. High selectivity values (s=29 at 0 degrees C) and a remarkable stability of the catalytic system in the operation conditions have been recorded for unsubstituted BINOL. No significant loss of activity/selectivity is recorded after 10 consecutive KR cycles in batch. A continuous flow process has been implemented and operated with a 100 mmol (32.8 g) sample of racemic monoacetylated BINOL in dichloromethane solution in an 84 hours experiment with a packed bed reactor containing 1 g (f=0.37 mmol.g(-1)) of the functional resin (s=17-21). Residence time can be decreased to 10 min with the same reactor to achieve a conversion of 58% with a selectivity factor s=17 when a more highly functionalized catalyst (f=0.88 mmol.g(-1)) is used. This translates into a remarkable combined productivity of 5.5 mmol(prod) . mmol(cat)(-1) . h(-1).

Zwitterionic polysaccharides (ZPSs) activate T-cell-dependent immune responses by major histocompatibility complex class II presentation. Herein, we report the first synthesis of a Morganella morganii ZPS repeating unit as an enabling tool in the synthesis of novel ZPS materials. The repeating unit incorporates a 1,2-cis-alpha-glycosidic bond; the problematic 1,2-trans-galactosidic bond, Gal-beta-(1 -> 3)-GalNAc; and phosphoglycerol and phosphocholine residues which have not been previously observed together as functional groups on the same oligosaccharide. The successful third-generation approach leverages a first in class glycosylation of a phosphoglycerol-functionalized acceptor. To install the phosphocholine unit, a highly effective phosphocholine donor was synthesized.

Highly regioselective silylation of primary hydroxyl groups of unprotected polyols and diols was obtained by the use of a mixed solvent of MeCN/DMF (10:1) in this study. DMF was discovered to be a good catalyst in this reaction, although the silylation using DMF as a solvent has been a common method for more than 40 years. The catalytic mechanism of DMF for the silylation was also proposed herein after intensive investigation of the reaction by NMR techniques. It has been demonstrated that a complex with a 1:1 ratio of the binding partners can be formed between TBSCl and DMF and has an association constant of 12/M, thus activating the silylation.

The chemical modification of amino acids plays an important role in the modulation of proteins or peptides and has useful applications in the activation and stabilization of enzymes, chemical biology, shotgun proteomics, and the production of peptide-based drugs. Although chemoselective modification of amino acids such as lysine and arginine via the insertion of respective chemical moieties as citraconic anhydride and phenyl glyoxal is important for achieving desired application objectives and has been extensively reported, the extent and chemoselectivity of the chemical modification of specific amino acids using specific chemical agents (blocking or modifying agents) has yet to be sufficiently clarified owing to a lack of suitable assay methodologies. In this study, we examined the utility of a fluorogenic assay method, based on a fluorogenic tripeptide substrate (FP-AA1-AA2-AA3) and the proteolytic enzyme trypsin, in determinations of the extent and chemoselectivity of the chemical modification of lysine or arginine. As substrates, we used two fluorogenic tripeptide probes, MeRho-Lys-Gly-Leu(Ac) (lysine-specific substrate) and MeRho-Arg-Gly-Leu(Ac) (arginine-specific substrate), which were designed, synthesized, and evaluated for chemoselective modification of specific amino acids (lysine and arginine) using the fluorogenic assay. The results are summarized in terms of half-maximal inhibitory concentrations (IC50) for the extent of modification and ratios of IC50 values (IC(50)arginine/IC(50)lysine and IC(50)lysine/IC(50)arginine) as a measure of the chemoselectivity of chemical modification for amino acids lysine and arginine. This novel fluorogenic assay was found to be rapid, precise, and reproducible for determinations of the extent and chemoselectivity of chemical modification.

Two catalytic asymmetric vinylogous aldol-type reactions of aldehydes with ally! phosphonate and allyl sulfone have been uncovered in good to high yields for the first time, The bulky ligand-(R)-DTBM-SEGPHOS-was found to be the key to perfectly control both regio- and enantioselectivities. Transformations of the vinylogous products (including Horner-Wadsworth-Emmons and Julia olefinations) were successfully realized by virtue of the phosphonate and sulfone moieties. Moreover, the present methodology was successfully applied in the asymmetric synthesis of natural products.
