A series of 15 novel 1,3,4-thiadiazole amide derivatives containing a protocatechuic acid moiety were synthesized and structurally characterized. In addition, the corresponding imino (4) and amino (5) analogues of a phenyl-substituted 1,3,4-thiadiazole amide derivative 3a were prepared to compare the effects of the structural changes on the radical-scavenging activity. The obtained compounds were examined for their antioxidative potential by 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) and 2,2′-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) (ABTS) assays. In addition, selected compounds were studied by density functional theory (DFT) and cyclic voltammetry experiments. The tested compounds showed high potential to scavenging DPPH radical and ABTS radical cation compared with the referent antioxidants ascorbic acid and nordihydroguaiaretic acid (NDGA). On the basis of the calculated thermodynamic parameters, it can be concluded that the sequential proton loss electron transfer (SPLET) mechanism represents the most probable reaction path in a polar solvent for DPPH radical-scavenging activity. On the other hand, the single electron transfer followed by proton transfer (SET-PT) can be a likely mechanistic pathway in the case of an ABTS radical cation. (C) 2019 Academie des sciences. Copper (II) immobilized on L-arginine-beta-cyclodextrin-functionalized magnetite nanoparticles (nano-Fe3O4@L-arginine-CD-Cu(II)) were successfully synthesized and fully characterized using FT-IR, XRD, SEM, EDX, ICP, TGA and VSM techniques. The catalytic activity of these magnetically retrievable nanoparticles was evaluated in the direct oxidation of primary alcohols and benzyl halides to acids in neat conditions that was observed to proceed well and products were obtained in good yields. Taking natural product phenazine-1-carboxamide (PCN) as a lead compound, a series of novel phenazine-1-carboxylic acid diamide derivatives were designed and synthesised. Their structures were confirmed by H-1-NMR and HRMS. The bioassays showed that some of the target compounds exhibited promising in vitro fungicidal activities, and exhibited excellent and selective herbicidal activities. Particularly, compounds c, h, o and s displayed root length inhibition activities against barnyard grass with the rate of more than 80%. Compound c exhibited the best activity among all the target compounds against barnyard grass stalk length with the IC50 value of 0.158 mmol/L, and compound o exhibited the best and wide spectrum inhibition against barnyard grass root length and rape in both root length and stalk length herbicidal activities with its IC50 values of 0.067, 0.048 and 0.059 mmol/L respectively. A room temperature ammonia gas sensor has been fabricated by depositing the thin film of Functionalized Graphene Oxide (GO) using Langmuir Blodgett (LB) technique on SiO2/Si wafers. Thermal evaporation technique was used for deposition of aluminum (Al) contacts for measuring the resistance of fabricated thin film. Different concentration of Meta Toluic acid (15 mM, 50 mM, 75 mM) has been used for functionalization of GO. X-Ray Diffraction (XRD), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and Raman spectroscopy were used to characterize the Graphene Oxide (GO) after functionalization. Also, Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) was carried out for bothGO and functionalized GO. Gas sensing behavior of functionalized GO has been investigated for different concentration of ammonia gas. Sensor response was studied for low concentration (100 ppm) of ammonia gas. Highest response at 100 ppm concentration was found to be similar to 12%. Higher concentration of MTA in GO leads to higher response of ammonia gas. This enhanced gas response is attributed to the enhanced ester formation reaction at the surface of sensing film, and more defects and carbon vacancy in functionalized GO, which eventually leads to more interaction with NH3 gas molecules.

The metal-free activation of C(sp(3))-H bonds to value-added products is of paramount importance in organic synthesis. We report the use of the commercially available organic dye 2,4,6-triphenylpyrylium tetrafluoroborate (TPP) for the conversion of methylarenes to the corresponding aryl nitriles via a photocatalytic process. Applying this methodology, a variety of cyanobenzenes have been synthesized in good to excellent yield under metal- and cyanide-free conditions. We demonstrate the scope of the method with over 50 examples including late-stage functionalization of drug molecules (celecoxib) and complex structures such as l-menthol, amino acids, and cholesterol derivatives. Furthermore, the presented synthetic protocol is applicable for gram-scale reactions. In addition to methylarenes, selected examples for the cyanation of aldehydes, alcohols and oximes are demonstrated as well. Detailed mechanistic investigations have been carried out using time-resolved luminescence quenching studies, control experiments, and NMR spectroscopy as well as kinetic studies, all supporting the proposed catalytic cycle.

We report the magnesiation of aryl fluorides catalyzed by an Al-Rh heterobimetallic complex. We show that the complex is highly reactive to cleave the C-F bonds across the polarized Al-Rh bond under mild conditions. The reaction allows the use of an easy-to-handle magnesium powder to generate a range of arylmagnesium reagents from aryl fluorides, which are conventionally inert to such metalation compared with other aryl halides.

Herein, cobalt embedded in nitrogen-doped porous carbon (Co@NC) was developed as a robust heterogeneous catalyst for the dehydrogenative coupling of primary alcohols and hydroxides. With Co@NC as the first earth-abundant metal/carbon composite material for this transformation, numerous aromatic and aliphatic carboxylic acids were efficiently afforded. Notably, the newly prepared Co@NC was fabricated in a facile and straightforward manner and reused up to 15 recycle rounds without activity decay. It is also worth emphasizing that the catalyst recycling was realized via magnetic separation with no special treatment or activation. Additionally, further experiments elucidated the pivotal role of the cobalt and nitrogen elements dispersed in the carbon matrix as well as the hierarchical porosity (micro-/mesopores) in the catalytic activity and recyclability. Considering the active sites of Co@NC, we envisioned that the Co-N species was the most active site, while other active sites such as Co-O, Co-0 species and free N-doped carbon were also present, but demonstrating lower activity or stability in comparison with the Co-N species. Additional mechanistic investigations were carried out to gain more insights into the possible reaction pathways. We found that the aldehyde was identified as a crucial intermediate, and two possible pathways were proposed for this catalytic process. (C) 2020 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
