A series of novel sulfide derivatives containing 1,3,4-oxadiazole and pyridine were synthesized, characterized, and tested for their antibacterial activity against tobacco bacterial wilt and rice bacterial blight and for insecticidal activity toward diamondback moth. The results showed that some compounds had good insecticidal and bactericidal activity, e.g., the activities of compounds 6e and 6g-6j toward tobacco bacterial wilt were much better than those of commercial thiodiazole-copper, and some of the synthesized compounds possessed good insecticidal activity against Plutella xylostella. Compounds 6d, 6h, 6j, 6l, 6p, 6r, and 6p displayed over 93% activity at 500 mg L-1.

Direct C-H bond oxidation of organic materials, and producing the necessary oxygenated compounds under mild conditions, has attracted increasing interest. The selective oxidation of various alkylbenzenes was carried out by means of a new catalyst containing VO2+ species supported on silica-coated Fe3O4 nanoparticles usingt-butyl hydroperoxide as an oxidant at room temperature in H2O or solvent-free media. The chemical and structural characterization of the catalyst using several methods such as FTIR spectroscopy, XRD, FETEM, FESEM, SAED, EDX and XPS showed that VO2+ is covalently bonded to the silica surface. High selectivity and excellent conversion of various toluene derivatives, with less reactive aliphatic (sp(3)) C-H bonds, to related benzoic acids were quite noticeable. The aerobic oxygenation reaction of these alkylbenzenes was studied under the same conditions. All the results accompanied by sustainability of the inexpensive and simple magnetically separable heterogeneous catalyst proved the important criteria for commercial applications.

An efficient method for the directing group controlled rhodium-catalyzed addition reaction of oxa/azabicylic alkenes with aromatic ketones and benzoic acids has been developed. The ketones and benzoic acids afforded different addition products when reacted with oxa/azabicyclic alkenes. The reaction between ketones and azabenzonorbornadienes furnished the ring-opening addition products. The reaction between benzoic acids and aza/oxabicyclic alkenes proceeded in the absence of silver salt, giving the 1:2 hydroarylation products in yields up to 96%.

A series of 15 novel 1,3,4-thiadiazole amide derivatives containing a protocatechuic acid moiety were synthesized and structurally characterized. In addition, the corresponding imino (4) and amino (5) analogues of a phenyl-substituted 1,3,4-thiadiazole amide derivative 3a were prepared to compare the effects of the structural changes on the radical-scavenging activity. The obtained compounds were examined for their antioxidative potential by 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) and 2,2′-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) (ABTS) assays. In addition, selected compounds were studied by density functional theory (DFT) and cyclic voltammetry experiments. The tested compounds showed high potential to scavenging DPPH radical and ABTS radical cation compared with the referent antioxidants ascorbic acid and nordihydroguaiaretic acid (NDGA). On the basis of the calculated thermodynamic parameters, it can be concluded that the sequential proton loss electron transfer (SPLET) mechanism represents the most probable reaction path in a polar solvent for DPPH radical-scavenging activity. On the other hand, the single electron transfer followed by proton transfer (SET-PT) can be a likely mechanistic pathway in the case of an ABTS radical cation. (C) 2019 Academie des sciences. We report an approach to the visible light-initiated, nickel-catalyzed esterification of carboxylic acids with aryl bromides. Thioxanthen-9-one works as a triplet photosensitizer to significantly accelerate this cross-coupling to provide aryl esters in moderate to excellent yields at room temperature. A mechanistic investigation indicates that this esterification undergoes the stepwise oxidative addition of an arylbromide to nickel, transmetalation of an aryl-Ni(ii) bromide complex, energy transfer from thioxanthen-9-one to an excited-state aryl-Ni(ii) carboxylate and reductive elimination to the aryl ester. This study contributes to the utilization of ketones as triplet photosensitisers in photochemical transformations.

A gas sensor has been fabricated by depositing the thin film of Functionalized Graphene Oxide (GO) using Langmuir Blodget (LB) technique on SiO2/Si wafers. Aluminum (Al) contacts were deposited using thermal evaporation technique for measuring the resistance of fabricated thin film. Three different concentrations (15 mM, 50 mM, 75 mM) of Meta Toluic acid (MTA) have been used for functionalization of GO. X-Ray Diffraction (XRD), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and Raman spectroscopy were used to characterize the Graphene Oxide (GO) after functionalization. Also, Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) was carried out for both GO and functionalized GO to study the surface morphology. Gas sensing behavior of functionalized GO has been investigated using two probe resistance measurement method for different concentration of ammonia gas. Sensor response was studied for ammonia concentration varied from 100 to 2000 ppm. Highest response obtained at 100 ppm concentration was found to be similar to 12.2% for sample TG(75). Higher concentration of MTA (up to a critical value) in GO leads to higher response of ammonia gas. This enhanced gas response has been due to the increased ester formation reaction at the surface of sensing film, which eventually leads to more interaction with NH3 gas molecules. In addition, defects and carbon vacancy in functionalized GO also acts as the trapping sites for gas molecules being sensed. The selectivity of the sensor has been investigated in different environment and sensor was found to be very selective towards ammonia gas. For stability investigation of the fabricated sensor, the sensor response has been recorded for 45 days.

Macrocyclic peptides are promising scaffolds of bioactive compounds and clinical therapeutics. Herein, we develop a strategy for the macrocyclization of biaryl-bridged peptides through late-stage Pd-catalyzed C(sp(2))-H arylation. This method displays broad substrate scope and high efficiency in the synthesis of peptide conjugates with various bioactive molecules. Furthermore, we applied this method to prepare peptide macrocycles with aryl-aryl cross-links. Our results show the effectiveness of backbone amide groups as directing groups in Pd-catalyzed C-H functionalization of peptides.

A formal C-H carboxylation of unactivated arenes using CO2 in green solvents is described. The present strategy combines a sterically controlled Ir-catalyzed C-H borylation followed by a Cu-catalyzed carboxylation of the in situ generated organoboronates. The reaction is highly regioselective for the C-H carboxylation of 1,3-disubstituted and 1,2,3-trisubstituted benzenes, 1,2- or 1,4-symmetrically substituted benzenes, fluorinated benzenes and different heterocycles. The developed methodology was applied to the late-stage C-H carboxylation of commercial drugs and ligands.
