Here we describe the development of biaryl 2,5-diphenylphospholanes as a new class of C-2-symmetric, monodentate ligands for asymmetric Suzuki-Miyaura (ASM) reactions. Screening of a series of exemplary phospholanes led to the identification of two ligands that were used to prepare a range of atropisomeric biaryl and heterobiaryl products with good to excellent levels of enantioselectivity (up to 97:3 e.r.) under mild conditions. DFT studies suggest that the formation of a constraining ligand pocket and coordination of one of the biaryl methoxy groups in the optimised ligands to the metal centre is crucial for restricting conformational freedom in the bond-forming step.

Work previously published by our group described novel methodology for the synthesis of xanthones and related products from phenolic benzophenones in a reaction mediated by ceric ammonium sulfate (CAS). In this paper we further explore this novel reaction by subjecting an additional set of phenolic benzophenones to CAS to afford a range of compounds, including xanthones, 9H-xanthen-2,9(4aH)-diones, 3H-spiro[benzofuran-2,1′-cyclohexa[2,5]-diene]-3,4′-diones, and biaryl compounds. A comparison of these reactions with the more commonly used oxidant ceric ammonium nitrate (CAN) was also conducted. Based on these results, greater insight into the reaction mechanism has been gained. In addition, the conversion of the synthesized xanthen-2,9(4aH)-diones to xanthones by treatment with sodium dithionite is described.

A simple and efficient methodology for Friedel-Crafts acylation of 3-methylindole using Amberlyst 15 resin as catalyst is described. This methodology shows good selectivity towards the formation of the products of 2-acylation, (3-methyl-1H-indol-2-yl)ketones. Several advantages can be ascribed to Amberlyst 15, among them; are the ease of handling, quick separation from the reaction mixture and minimum or no production of the chemical residues that must be eliminated. Besides, the catalyst can be easily recycled and reused with a minimal loss in activity through 6 reaction cycles. The catalyst was characterized by FT-IR spectroscopy and superficial acidity.

New derivatives of chromeno[4,3-b]quinolin-6-one were synthesized using novel SO3H-tryptamine supported on Fe3O4@SiO2@CPS which could be recycled as an effective magnetic nanocatalyst. SEM, EDX, XRD, FT-IR, TGA, VSM and BET analyses were utilized to confirm the magnetic nanocatalyst structure. Evaluation of Antimicrobial (antibacterial and antifungal) function of magnetic nanocatalyst as well as derivatives undergone synthesis was carried out according to MIC, MBC and MFC values. Moreover, evaluation of the derivatives subject to synthesis was performed according to DPPH free radical besides the biological features, in order to obtain justifiable biological features. A highly efficient protocol for the synthesis of isoquinolinediones by Rh-III-catalyzed C-H activation/annulation/decarboxylation of N-tosylbenzamides with diazo compounds is reported. The switchable synthesis of isocoumarins was also achieved successfully via C-H activation/annulation with slight modification of the reaction conditions. A series of substituted benzoate-bridged dichromium(II, II) complexes [Cr-2(RCO2)(4)(THF)(2)] ([Cr-2]), where RCO2- is substituted benzoate, was synthesized and its structural and magnetic properties were investigated. The orbital energies, as well as magnetic coupling energies, were also investigated using computational approaches. The HOMO/LUMO energy levels of the complexes are strongly dependent on the acidity, i.e., pK(a), of the corresponding benzoic acids (RCO2H), revealing a linear trend in the respective groups of non-ortho, mono-ortho, and bi-ortho substituted groups. The Cr center dot center dot center dot Cr magnetic coupling constant (E-S (T)) is little affected by pK(a); instead, the E-S (T) is associated with the HOMO/LUMO gap and strongly correlated with the Cr center dot center dot center dot Cr distance.

Nano copper ferrite catalyst is prepared and characterized by scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive X-ray, X-ray diffraction, vibrational sample magnetometry, and Fourier transform infrared. The catalytic activity is probed for cross-dehydrogenative coupling of aromatic aldehydes in the presence of tert-butyl hydroperoxide as the oxidant. This catalytic protocol appears as a simple, rather cheap, clean, and efficient practical strategy for the synthesis of symmetrical anhydrides, with proper efficiency (66%). The palladium-catalyzed selective activation of C-H bonds is of great importance for the construction of diverse bioactive molecules. Herein, monodisperse CuPd alloy nanoparticles supported on reduced graphene oxide have been used as high efficient and recyclable catalyst for C(sp(3))-H acyloxylation of 8-methylquinolines in good yields under mild conditions. The developed catalytic system proceeds with low palladium loading, good catalyst recyclability, high step and atom efficiency, excellent chemo and regioselectivity, good substrate and functional group compatibility, and applicable for large scale up synthesis. Preliminary studies were carried out to gain insights into the heterogeneous catalysis mechanism.

Imidazole-based epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) inhibitors were computationally designed and synthesized. The results of a comparative study of phosphine-containing and phosphine-free catalytic systems of the Heck reaction using aromatic carboxylic anhydrides as arylating agents are presented. It was demonstrated that the patterns of diff erential selectivity of the reaction under competition of two aromatic anhydrides or two alkenes are independent of the presence of a tertiary phosphine additive in the system. It was established that palladium complexes with no phosphine ligands in their coordination sphere are catalytically active at the step of activation of aromatic carboxylic anhydride and alkene. The patterns of diff erential selectivity for regioisomers of arylated products provide the evidence of the participation of phosphine-containing anionic palladium complexes in the regioselectivity-determining step of the catalytic cycle. The data obtained are in agreement with the phosphine involvement in the catalyst transformations proceeding outside the main catalytic cycle.
