In the current paper we open up the potential of SuFEx reactions as enantioselective reactions, analyze the role of Si and outline the mechanism of this reaction. As a result, fast, high-yielding, Si-free and enantiospecific SuFEx reactions of sulfonimidoyl fluorides have been developed, and their mechanism shown, by both experimental and theoretical methods, to yield chiral products.

Work previously published by our group described novel methodology for the synthesis of xanthones and related products from phenolic benzophenones in a reaction mediated by ceric ammonium sulfate (CAS). In this paper we further explore this novel reaction by subjecting an additional set of phenolic benzophenones to CAS to afford a range of compounds, including xanthones, 9H-xanthen-2,9(4aH)-diones, 3H-spiro[benzofuran-2,1′-cyclohexa[2,5]-diene]-3,4′-diones, and biaryl compounds. A comparison of these reactions with the more commonly used oxidant ceric ammonium nitrate (CAN) was also conducted. Based on these results, greater insight into the reaction mechanism has been gained. In addition, the conversion of the synthesized xanthen-2,9(4aH)-diones to xanthones by treatment with sodium dithionite is described.

The cysteine protease, falcipain-2 is an important drug target in human malaria parasite Plasmodium falciparum. A new series of 2-(4-(substituted benzoyl)-1,4-diazepan-1-yl)-N-phenylacetamide derivatives 5(a-t) were designed as per pharmacophoric requirements of falcipain-2 inhibitors using ligand-based approach. The target compounds were synthesized from the key intermediate, 2-(1,4-Diazepan-1-yl)-N-phenylacetamide, by coupling it with appropriate carboxylic acids using carbodiimide chemistry. Structural features of target compounds were characterized by spectral data (H-1 NMR, and mass) and elemental analyses. The purity of the final compounds was confirmed by HPLC. The compounds were tested for their in vitro falcipain-2 inhibitor activity on recombinant falcipain-2 enzyme. Five compounds 5b, 5g, 5h, 5j, 5k showed good inhibitory activity (>60%), against falcipain-2 at 10 mu M concentration, and fifteen compounds showed weak to moderate inhibitor activity. Compound 5g, the most potent compound from this series showed 72% inhibition at 10 mu M concentrations. (C) 2014 The Authors. The electronic structure and electronic transitions of four new mono Schiff base derivatives are interpreted by using absorption and fluorescence spectra including 28 different solution medium. Electrical dipole moments have been found by means of four different quantum mechanical methods based on solvatochromic shifts like Lippert-Mataga, Bakhshiev, modified Bilot-Kawski, and Reichardt methods. Quantitative researches of solvent-solute interactions are done by using Kamlet-Taft and Catalan parameters. In absorption and fluorescence spectra, bathochromic shift occurs with dispersion-polarization forces effect. The electronic transitions and electronic structure of these molecules have changed to dependent on solvent medium property. HOMO, LUMO, MEP, and SAS were calculated using B3LYP/6-311G(d,p) level of theory. Solvatochromism, photophysical properties, and electronic structure were discussed in detail. A new metal-, oxidant-, and solvent-free ecofriendly domino method has been established for modular synthesis of a diverse range of medicinally promising hydroxyarylated unsymmetrical pyridines in good to high chemical yields with an excellent regioselectivity. This domino process involves a range of N-sulfonyl ketimines as C,N-binucleophiles, enolizable ketones, and aromatic/heteroaromatic aldehydes using ammonium acetate as an ideal promoter under neat conditions, which creates two new C-C bonds and one C-N bond. Notably, the neutral reaction conditions are mild enough to tolerate a range of functionalities and cover a variety of substrates, thus bestowing a powerful avenue to access tri- and tetrasubstituted pyridines including carbo- and heterocyclic fused ones. Interestingly, a practical, scalable, and high-yielding synthesis of pyridylphenol derivatives was successfully accomplished by our unique method.

Perovskite crystal grain size control, grain boundary passivation, and grain bridging are the keys to obtaining high efficiency in perovskite solar cells. A small amount of semi-conducting single-walled carbon nanotubes added to a perovskite active layer can achieve this. In particular, the surfactants attached to the semiconducting single-walled carbon nanotubes a crucial role. In this work, we synthesized a new surfactant, 4,6-di(anthracen-9-yl)-1,3-phenylene bis(dimethylcarbamate), which has a polyaromatic group on one end and a urea-analogue carbamate group on the other end. The polyaromatic anthracene end functions as a nanotweezer clenching the carbon nanotubes strongly via pi-pi interaction while the carbamate end interacts with Pb2+, functioning as a strong Lewis base. In addition, the new surfactant has conjugated double bonds with a suitable bandgap, resulting in enhanced charge mobility in the perovskite film. Overall, the new surfactant-clenched semiconducting carbon nanotubes showcase superior effectiveness as passivators and charge bridges in perovskite solar cells as compared to the conventional deoxycholate surfactant-wrapped semiconducting single-walled carbon nanotubes. The new surfactant-attached semiconducting carbon nanotube-added NH3CH3PbI3-based perovskite solar cells exhibited a power conversion efficiency of 20.7%, which is higher than that of the reference devices with no additives (18.4%) and the previously reported semiconducting single-walled carbon nanotube-added devices (19.7% in this work and 19.5% in the literature).
