Sustainable technologies rely on the development of universal catalyst materials. While a lot of the attention has been given to improving the performance of one single catalyst material for one specific application, there is still a need to find ways to develop catalysts that can simultaneously be utilized for several chemo- and electrocatalytic processes. In this work, we have surveyed a series of novel, cobalt-based catalyst materials derived from an amorphous MOF in an array of diverged applications. Specifically, we have focused on organic transformations such as oxidative of alkylarenes and benzylic homocoupling reactions as well as several electrocatalytic processes, which directly relate to energy conversion and storage devices, such as oxygen reduction (ORR), oxygen evolution (OER) and hydrogen evolution (HER) reactions. We have observed that only one material, TAL-2-900, delivered the optimal solution. The stability and recyclability of this unique multifunctional material has been examined.

Three-, four-, and five-component host/guest crystals with multi-color and white light emission is described. Our strategy is based on the confinement of aromatic donor guests in supramolecular acceptor hosts. The supramolecular acceptor hosts (NDI-TPFB) were composed of N,N’-dipyrid-3-yl-1,4,5,8- naphthalenediimide (NDI) with two tris(pentafluorophenyl) borane (TPFB) linked by boron-nitrogen dative bonds as Lewis acid-base pairs, which spontaneously formed upon mixing the components. In the first part, a set of three-component crystals with 14 different aromatic guests were characterized to elucidate the structure-property relationships. In the latter part, a series of 17 types of four-and fivecomponent crystals were formed with the use of binary or ternary guest inclusion systems, and their structural and photophysical properties were investigated. Among them, 14 types of crystals were formed effectively without destroying the crystal structure, as determined by X-ray diffraction and fluorescence microscopy. Notably, flexible color tuning, including white light emission, was realized by tuning the guest ratio and the combinations. Various intermolecular interactions such as C-H center dot center dot center dot F interactions, pi-pi stacking, charge-transfer interactions, and inclusion phenomena were important for forming the crystals. This approach that yields a rational solution of multicomponent crystals could be potentially useful for obtaining novel photofunctional solid-state systems.

The extensively developed ene-type enantioselective cycloisomerization of classical 1,n-enynes provides an efficient approach to chiral cyclic 1,4-dienes. In contrast, the catalytic asymmetric heteroarenyne (heteroarene-alkyne) cycloisomerization involving the dearomative transformation of endocyclic aromatic C=C bonds remains unknown. Herein, we communicate a PdH-catalyzed enantioselective heteroarenyne cycloisomerization reaction of alkyne-tethered indole substrates (formal 1,5- and 1,6-enynes). Based on this strategy, a variety of structurally diverse chiral spiro and fused indoline derivatives bearing quaternary stereocenters and exocyclic C=C bonds are afforded in moderate to excellent yields and excellent enantioselectivities (up to 98 % ee). The classical ene-type enantioselective 1,5-enyne cycloisomerization of N-vinylpropiolamides is also developed to afford chiral 2-pyrrolones in good to excellent ee values.

The organocatalytic enantio- and diastereoselective cycloetherification of 1,3-cyclohexanedione-bearing enones involving the in situ generation of chiral cyanohydrins was developed. This transformation offers the first catalytic asymmetric approach to oxadecalin derivatives containing contiguous tetrasubstituted chiral carbons at the bridge heads of the fused ring systems. Depending on substituents, both cis- and trans-decalin-type scaffolds were synthesized with good to excellent stereoselectivities, and a range of functional groups accumulated on the chiral quaternary carbon moieties of the trans-oxadecalin derivatives.

A simple and efficient method for the synthesis of isoquinolone and isocoumarin derivatives is reported. The method for the first time provides a one-step divergent synthesis of important isoquinolone and isocoumarin skeletons from benzoic acid by switching the coupling partners. In the present work, a commercially used azo dye Remazol navy blue was completely degraded into less toxic intermediates in an integrated microbial fuel cell-aerobic system. A novel defined bacterial consortium comprising of organisms isolated from dye contaminated wastewater has been used as inoculum for this study. As compared to the traditional static incubation method, a rapid decolorization of Remazol navy blue was noticed in the anodic chamber of microbial fuel cell. In low to moderate dye concentrations (25-100mg/L), almost complete decolorization of Remazol navy blue was achieved within 12h of microbial fuel cell operation. An immobilized iridium complex photocatalyst Ir(ppy)(2)(PDVB-py) was synthesized by immobilization of the iridium complex onto the nanoporous vinylpyridine-divinylbenzene copolymer (PDVB-py). A concise and divergent approach for the total syntheses of four cembrane diterpenoids, namely (+)-sarcophytin, (+)-chatancin, (-)-3-oxochatancin, and (-)-pavidolideB, has been developed, and it also led to the structural revision of (-)-isosarcophytin. The key steps of the strategy feature a double Mukaiyama Michael addition/elimination, a Helquist annulation, two substrate-controlled facial-selective hydrations, and a pinacol rearrangement. The described syntheses not only achieved these natural products in an efficient manner, but also provided insight into the biosynthetic relationship between the two different skeletons.
