A molecular crystal of a 2-D hydrogen-bonded organic framework (HOF) undergoes an unusual structural transformation after solvent removal from the crystal pores during activation. The conformationally flexible host molecule, ABTPA, adapts its molecular conformation during activation to initiate a framework expansion. The microcrystalline activated phase was characterized by three-dimensional electron diffraction (3D ED), which revealed that ABTPA uses out-of-plane anthracene units as adaptive structural anchors. These units change orientation to generate an expanded, lower density framework material in the activated structure. The porous HOF, ABTPA-2, has robust dynamic porosity (SA(BET) = 1 183 m(2) g(-1)) and exhibits negative area thermal expansion. We use crystal structure prediction (CSP) to understand the underlying energetics behind the structural transformation and discuss the challenges facing CSP for such flexible molecules.

In the context of the growing interest of the scientific community for the development of sustainable synthetic strategies to access aromatic structures, we present a practical and metal-free approach to (hetero)biaryls which exploits the advantages of multicomponent reactions in sustainable solvents. In situ acid-catalysed generation of (hetero)aryl acetoxy dienes from the corresponding (hetero)arylidene acetones in a metal vessel, followed by Diels-Alder reaction using an electron-poor alkyne as dienophile, delivers the expected aromatic products after final oxidation of the cycloadduct. This protocol has been demonstrated as a convenient alternative to the previously reported synthetic strategies, considering its scalability and environmental sustainability and the low cost of substrates and equipment. The aroma profile of raw pu?er tea (RPT) depends on its storage duration (2?10 years) and storage conditions (wet-hot or dry-cold environment). We analyzed the major odorants of RPT samples by performing metabolomic analysis and by using the molecular sensory science approach. Under dry-cold storage conditions, tea leaves had more carotenoid derivatives, glycoside-derived volatiles, and phenolic volatiles, resulting in ?fresh,? ?floral,? and ?sweet? aroma. Under wet-hot storage conditions, tea leaves had more methoxybenzenes, which contributed considerably to their ?stale? and ?woody? aroma. We identified 11 and 4 compounds as the odor markers of RPTs when stored in dry-cold and wet-hot environments, respectively. Our findings provide a scientific basis for optimal storage that yields the desired aroma profile.

A series of Fe/h-BN catalysts promoted with Cu or Mn were prepared for Fischer-Tropsch synthesis (FTS). The physicochemical properties, crystal structures and morphologies of the catalysts were characterized by N-2 physisorption, FT-IR, TPR, XPS, XRD, MES and TEM. It is found that iron oxide nanoparticles are highly dispersed on h-BN matrix due to the anchoring effect of surface defects and the accommodation of porous structures of h-BN. The characterization results indicate that strong interaction between iron oxide and h-BN is present on un-promoted catalyst, which endows the h-BN supported iron catalyst with stable properties under FTS conditions but severely retards reduction of the catalyst. The addition of Cu to Fe/h-BN can to some extent overcome the strong interaction by introducing more sites for dissociating H-2. It is observed that Cu promoter can increase the reduction or carburization degree and thus enhance the FTS activity. The addition of Mn to Fe/h-BN can weaken the strong interaction by altering the electron structure of iron species. And the electron-rich Fe species are responsible for easy reduction and the enhanced FTS performance. Besides, a higher activity can be realized by co-adding Cu and Mn to the Fe/h-BN catalyst. These results suggest that the synergistic effect of Mn and Cu can largely improve the performance of Fe/h-BN catalyst without impairing the stability of the catalyst. The present study paves a way to tailor the performances of FTS catalysts with h-BN as support.

alpha,alpha ‘-bis(substituted benzylidene)cycloalkanones were efficiently prepared from variously substituted aldehydes and cycloalkanones in water by using ash of pomegranate peels (APP) as a catalyst. The APP-catalyst was obtained from bio-waste by simple thermal treatment to dry peels of pomegranate fruit and formation of its active phase was confirmed by FT-IR, XRD, XRF, EDX, SEM, DSC-TGA and BET techniques. The analysis revealed that the present catalyst has basic sites which promote the synthesis of desired products. The main attractions of our protocol are utilization of highly abundant bio-waste-derived catalyst and good-to-excellent yield in shortest reaction time. This green protocol was further extended for structurally diverse 2-arylidene-1-tetralones by condensation of equimolar quantity of aromatic aldehydes and 1-tetralone at low temperature.
