We report a novel ecofriendly cascade reaction for the synthesis of arylsulfonyl-4H-pyran derivatives by a three component fusion reaction of chosen aldehyde, dimedone and phenylsulphonyl acetonitrile at room temperature using ruthenia doped fluorapatite (RuO2/FAp) as recyclable catalyst. Different percentages of RuO2/FAp materials were prepared and characterized by FT-IR, P-XRD, BET, SEM-EDX and TEM analysis. Attractive features of the synthetic approach are operational simplicity, cost-effectiveness, short reaction time and excellent yields. Easily recoverable and reusable catalyst material without any deceptive loss of catalytic activity up to seven cycles is additional benefit.

We herein disclose the first report of a first-row transition metal-catalyzed alpha,beta-dehydrogenation of carbonyl compounds using allyl-nickel catalysis. Herein, cobalt embedded in nitrogen-doped porous carbon (Co@NC) was developed as a robust heterogeneous catalyst for the dehydrogenative coupling of primary alcohols and hydroxides. With Co@NC as the first earth-abundant metal/carbon composite material for this transformation, numerous aromatic and aliphatic carboxylic acids were efficiently afforded. Notably, the newly prepared Co@NC was fabricated in a facile and straightforward manner and reused up to 15 recycle rounds without activity decay. It is also worth emphasizing that the catalyst recycling was realized via magnetic separation with no special treatment or activation. Additionally, further experiments elucidated the pivotal role of the cobalt and nitrogen elements dispersed in the carbon matrix as well as the hierarchical porosity (micro-/mesopores) in the catalytic activity and recyclability. Considering the active sites of Co@NC, we envisioned that the Co-N species was the most active site, while other active sites such as Co-O, Co-0 species and free N-doped carbon were also present, but demonstrating lower activity or stability in comparison with the Co-N species. Additional mechanistic investigations were carried out to gain more insights into the possible reaction pathways. The reaction of TMS-ethers of 2,4-diaryl-1,1,1-trifluorobut-3-en-2-ols with arenes in TfOH at room temperature for 5 min results in the formation of trans-/cis-1,3-diaryl-1-trifluoromethyl indanes in good yields (up to 99%). The predominant or exclusive formation of indanes with a trans-configuration of 1,3-diaryl groups has been observed. The reaction proceeds through an intermediate formation of the corresponding mesomeric CF3-allyl cations. A plausible reaction mechanism is discussed.

The expedient synthesis of alphitolic acid (1) as well as its natural C-3-epimer and 2-O-ester derivatives was accomplished in a few steps from the readily commercially available betulin (9). A Rubottom oxidation delivered an alpha-hydroxy group in a stereo-and chemoselective manner. The diastereoselective reduction of the a-hydroxy ketone was key to accessing the 1,2-diol moiety of this class of natural products. Our concise and stereoselective synthetic protocol allowed the gram-scale synthesis of these natural products, which will facilitate future biological evaluations.

A variety of appropriately substituted internal alkynes were transformed into the corresponding cyano-substituted phenanthrenes, dihydronaphthalenes, and cyclohepta-1,3,5-trienes in moderate to excellent yields by treatment with imidazolium thiocyanate 1, which serves as an easy to handle [CN](+) precursor, in the presence of BCl3. It remains challenging to achieve the selective cleavage of C-C bonds in lignin or lignin model compounds to produce aromatic products in high yield and selectivity. We have developed a redox-neutral photocatalytic strategy to accomplish this goal in both beta-O-4 and beta-1 lignin models at room temperature (RT) via proton-coupled electron transfer (PCET) process without any pretreatments of substrate, by adjusting the alkalinity of base to obtain a lignin models/base PCET pair with a bond dissociation free energy close to 102 kcal/mol. Without breaking down C-beta-C-gamma bond and any C-O bonds, this PCET method is 100% atom economy and produces exclusive C-alpha-C-beta bond cleavage products, such as benzaldehydes (up to 97%) and phenyl ethers (up to 96%), in high to excellent yields and selectivities. Preliminary studies indicated that the PCET strategy is also effective for the depolymerization of native lignin at RT, thus providing significantly important foundation to the depolymerization of lignin. A series of 15 novel 1,3,4-thiadiazole amide derivatives containing a protocatechuic acid moiety were synthesized and structurally characterized. In addition, the corresponding imino (4) and amino (5) analogues of a phenyl-substituted 1,3,4-thiadiazole amide derivative 3a were prepared to compare the effects of the structural changes on the radical-scavenging activity. The obtained compounds were examined for their antioxidative potential by 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) and 2,2′-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) (ABTS) assays. In addition, selected compounds were studied by density functional theory (DFT) and cyclic voltammetry experiments. The tested compounds showed high potential to scavenging DPPH radical and ABTS radical cation compared with the referent antioxidants ascorbic acid and nordihydroguaiaretic acid (NDGA). On the basis of the calculated thermodynamic parameters, it can be concluded that the sequential proton loss electron transfer (SPLET) mechanism represents the most probable reaction path in a polar solvent for DPPH radical-scavenging activity. On the other hand, the single electron transfer followed by proton transfer (SET-PT) can be a likely mechanistic pathway in the case of an ABTS radical cation. (C) 2019 Academie des sciences. BACKGROUND: Chemical pesticides are the main measures for pest control, but have caused growing resistance of pests and brought a series of environmental problems. Development of high-efficient insecticidal molecules with novel scaffolds is therefore particularly urgent. RESULTS: Based on a [5 + 1] annulation reaction with 5-amino-1H-phenylpyrazole and dialkyl bromomalonate, 27 novel five-substituted 4,5-dihydropyrazolo[1,5-a]quinazolines were designed following the intermediate derivatization method and synthesized. Bioassay results indicated that most of the test compounds displayed good insecticidal activities against Plutella xylostella, Spodoptera frugiperda, and Solenopsis invicta. In particular, the insecticidal activities of compounds 4a, 4f, and 4m against P. xylostella [median lethal concentration (LC50) values ranged from 3.87 to 5.10 mg L-1] were comparable to that of indoxacarb (LC50 = 4.82 mg L-1). In addition, compounds 4a and 9e showed similar high insecticidal activities against Spodoptera frugiperda (mortality rate = 79.63% and 72.12%) at 100 mg L-1, comparable to that of fipronil (mortality rate: 68.44%); compound 9a showed possible delayed toxicity against Solenopsis invicta (mortality rate: 95.66%) after 5 days of treatment at 1.0 mg L-1. CONCLUSION: Due to their high insecticidal activities against P. xylostella, compound 4m, 4a, and 4f could be considered as qualified candidates for novel insecticide. Several other 4,5-dihydropyrazolo[1,5-a]quinazolines with relatively high bioactivity, such as compounds 9a and 9e, are also worth further optimization as potential insecticide or anticide candidates.
