Trace volatile organic compounds (VOCs) such as aldehydes and aromatics significantly deteriorate the indoor air quality especially in newly-decorated buildings. The universal water vapor would greatly decrease the adsorption capacity of ad-sorbents for trace VOCs via competitive adsorption and capillary condensation. Herein, we developed a strategy to subsequently modify the internal and external surface of CAU-1, an aluminum-based metal-organic framework (MOF), to significantly improve its humidity resistance. First, anhydrides were used to transfer amino groups of CAU-1 into hydrophobic groups via amide reaction. Second, polydimethylsiloxane was used to form a hydorphobic coating on its external surface. The adsorption capacity of as-modified CAU-1 for 1 ppm toluene increased about 6 times under 50% relative humidity (RH) at 298 K, even much higher than those of common adsorbents including hydrophobic ZSM-5. In addition, it could be completely regenerated below 373 K, about 65 K lower than that required for regenerating ZSM-5 under the same condition, which not only greatly reduces the energy consumption but also improves the safety and feasibility of in-situ regeneration of adsorbents in indoor environment.

Twenty-five seco-4-methyl-DCK derivatives were designed, synthesized and evaluated for chemoreversal activity when combined with paclitaxel or vincristine in two drug-resistant cancer cell lines (A2780/T and KB-V) respectively. Most of the new compounds displayed moderate to significant MDR reversal activities in the P-gp overexpressing A2780/T and KB-V cells. Especially, compounds 7o and 7y showed the most potent chemosensitization activities with more than 496 and 735 reversal ratios at a concentration of 10 mu M. Unexpectedly the newly synthesized compounds did not show chemosensitization activities observed in a non-P-gp overexpressing cisplatin resistant human ovarian cancer cell line (A2780/CDDP), implying that the MDR reversal effects might be associated with P-gp overexpression. Moreover, these compounds did not exhibit significant antiproliferative activities against nontumorigenic cell lines (HUVEC, HOSEC and T29) compared to the positive control verapamil at the tested concentration, which suggested better safety than verapamil. The pharmacological actions of the compounds will be studied further to explore their merit for development as novel candidates to overcome P-gp mediated MDR cancer.

A straightforward approach to the synthesis of two different series of cationic [5]helicenes has been achieved including, in dioxa series, the possibility to introduce aromatic functional groups at the periphery of the helical structure. While photophysical study highlights that the introduction of aryl substituents at position 23 of the helical moieties has a negligible impact on the optical properties, styryl substituents allow a welcoming extension of the conjugation pathways. Purpose: Recombinant human growth hormone (rhGH) has been used to improve growth in children with Noonan syndrome (NS). This study aimed to investigate the efficacy of rhGH therapy in Korean children with NS. Methods: Seventeen prepubertal children (10 boys, 7 girls) with NS who received rhGH therapy for at least 3 years between 2008 and 2017 were included. To compare the response, age- and sex-matched children with GH deficiency (GHD; n=31) were included. Height and growth velocity before and during treatment were analyzed. Results: The mean age of NS patients was 6.34 +/- 2.32 years. After treatment, the height standard deviation score (SDS) increased from -2.93 +/- 0.81 to -1.51 +/- 1.00 in patients with NS and from -2.45 +/- 0.42 to -1.09 +/- 0.47 in patients with GHD. There were no significant differences in growth velocity or change in height SDS between patients with NS and GHD. Growth velocity in the first year of treatment was higher in patients with PTPN11 mutations than those without PTPN11 mutations, but the change in height SDS was not significantly different between those 2 groups. Conclusion: rhGH therapy can increase linear growth in prepubertal children with NS. The growth response between patients with NS and patients with GHD was not significantly different. Furthermore, we observed that lower doses of growth hormone have a similar effect on height compared to previous studies in patients with NS. Our study indicates that rhGH treatment is useful for growth promotion.

To improve the efficiency of the photocatalytic decarbonylation of cyclopropenones, the effects of substituents on cyclopropenone were explored. A benzothiophene-substituted aminocyclopropenone exhibited significantly improved decarbonylation efficiency to produce the corresponding ynamine, which worked as a potent dehydration condensation agent. The benzothiophene derivative was applicable to the photocatalytic reaction in the presence of potential excited-state quenchers such as oxygen and anilines. The high catalyst sensitivity would be attributed to the involvement of triplet energy transfer reaction pathway, which was not observed in the reaction with previously reported aminocyclopropenones.

We report a direct single-electron oxidation of methylenecyclopropanes (MCPs) for the rapid construction of 4-aryl-1,2-dihydronaphthalene derivatives by merging visible light photoredox catalysis and cobalt catalysis. In MeCN with Et3N center dot 3HF (1.0 equiv.), the fluorination of MCPs can be realized in the presence of 9-mesityl-10-methylacridinium perchlorate and Co(dmgH)(2)PyCl, affording fluorinated 4-aryl-1,2-dihy-dronaphthalene derivatives in moderate yields. In MeCN/HFIP (7 : 3), 4-aryl-1,2-dihydronaphthalene derivatives were obtained in good yields through a MHAT process under similar conditions.
