Al was injected (i.p.) as aluminum sulfate (4, 40, and 100 mg/kg body weight, n = 5 per group) daily into day-old White Leghorn male chickens for 7, 15 and 30 days. Al treatment (100 mg dose) to chickens over 7 and 30 days resulted in a decrease in activities of cytosolic total and CN–sensitive superoxide dismutase (SOD) in the cerebral hemisphere (CH). In the 15-day treated group, activities of cytosolic total, CN–sensitive and CN–insensitive SOD of CH were decreased in response to all Al doses. In the liver, activities of cytosolic total and CN–sensitive SOD were decreased in response to all doses of Al treatment for 7 and 15 days. But 40 and 100 mg doses were effective in decreasing activities of the enzymes in the 30-day treated group. The catalase (CAT) activity of CH of chicks was inhibited by all doses of Al under treatment for 7 days, but was inhibited only in the case of the 100 mg dose when the duration of treatment was increased to 15 days. The inhibition was again observed in chickens treated for 30 days in response to 40 and 100 mg doses . CAT activity of liver was decreased in response to all Al doses in the 7-day treated group and in response to 40 and 100 mg doses in the 15- and 30-day treated groups. Al treatment did not affect lipid peroxide levels of CH and liver of chickens.

Two porous metal-organic frameworks [Co(Tt)2][Cu4(D-cam)4]·5H2O·DMF (1; Tt = tris(triazolyl)borate, D-H2cam = D-(+)-camphoric acid or (1R,3S)-1,2,2-trimethyl-1,3-cyclopentanedicarboxylic acid) and [Co(Tt)2][Cu4(L-cam)4]·5H2O·2DMF (2; L-H2cam = L-(-)-camphoric acid or (1S,3R)-1,2,2-trimethyl-1,3-cyclopentanedicarboxylic acid) were prepared by mixing Cu2+, Co(Tt), and camphoric acid under solvothermal conditions. The structures of 1 and 2 reveal that the two-dimensional layers composed of chiral ligands and Cu-Cu paddlewheel units are connected through the metalloligands to form three-dimensional networks. These solids show multifunctional properties such as gas adsorption onto the pores of the frameworks, antiferromagnetic coupling between spin carriers, and a small enantioselective separation of racemic alcs.

Removal of color to the same extent was also obtained when the inorganic polymer (500 mg/L from Flocusol-PA/18.B) or the organic polymer (2500 mg/L Nalcofloc plus 3 mg/L N677-SC) were added to the effluent at its original pH value of 8.0-8.5. The protective effect of α-lipoic acid (ALA) on diabetes cardiomyopathy and its mechanism were explored. Immunohistochem. method and western blot method were used to determine matrix metalloproteinase-9 (MMP-9), metalloproteinase-2 (MMP-2), and tissue inhibitors of matrix metalloproteinase-1 (TIMP-1) in myocardial tissue of the rats. Compared with those of the control group (4.62±1.03, 3.2±0.19), fasting blood glucose and serum fructosamine of the diabetic rats (25.45±3.24, 4.43±0.62) were significantly up-regulated (P<0.05). Cardiac function test showed that left ventricular end-diastolic pressure (LVEDP) increased and left ventricular systolic pressure (LVSP), ±dp/dtmax declined significantly in diabetes rats compared with those of the control rats (P<0.05 for all) and the protein expressions of MMP-2 (68.9±4.35), MMP-9 (87.38±11.10), TIMP-1 (81.82±9.61), and MMP-9/TIMP-1 (1.05±0.06) were also significantly up-regulated in the diabetic rats (P<0.05 for all). Compared with the diabetic group, fasting blood glucose and serum fructosamine of the ALA treated rats were significantly decreased (P<0.05 for all) and LVEDP (5.60±0.98 mmHg) decreased significantly (P<0.05) and LVSP (127.55±5.45 mmHg) elevated (P<0.05). The protein expressions of MMP-2 (62.26), MMP-9 (76.78), TIMP-1 (72.87) and MMP-9/TIMP-1 (1.03) of ALA treated rats were significantly decreased compared to those of the diabetic model rats (P<0.05 for all). ALA had protective effect on diabetic cardiomyopathy through regulating MMPs and TIMP-1.
