Continuation of structure?activity relationship study of novel benzamide derivatives as potential antipsychotics

A series of benzamide derivatives possessing potent dopamine D2, serotonin 5-HT1A, and 5-HT2A receptor properties were synthesized and evaluated as potential antipsychotics. Among them, 5-(4-(4-(benzo[d]isothiazol-3-yl)piperazin-1-yl)butoxy)-N-cyclopropyl-2-fluorobenzamide (4k) held the best pharmacological profile. It not only exhibited potent and balanced activities for the D2, 5-HT1A, and 5-HT2A receptors, but was also endowed with low to moderate activities for the 5-HT2C, H1, and M3 receptors, suggesting a low propensity for inducing weight gain or diabetes. In animal models, compound 4k reduced phencyclidine-induced hyperactivity with a high threshold for catalepsy or muscle relaxation induction. On the basis of its robust in vitro potency and in vivo efficacy in preclinical models of schizophrenia, 4k was selected as a candidate for further development.

Collection of ion-trap mass spectre of sulfonylurea pyrolysis products

The pyrograms of 14 sulfonylureas, i.e. herbicides characterized by high biological activity and low application dose are discussed and the mass spectra of over 30 relevant pyrolysis products as obtained with a heated filament pyrolyzer interfaced to a capillary gas chromatograph/ion-trap detector mass spectrometer are presented. Such a data compilation is useful for diagnostic purposes for both intact sulfonylureas and their metabolites after degradation in soil, because metabolites and pyrolysis products are often identical and most of their mass spectra are lacking in commercially available mass spectral libraries. The performance of the ion-trap detector based on the quality of the mass spectra is briefly discussed.

Release of volatile organic compounds by oxidative wear of automotive friction materials

Contribution of friction processes to the environmental pollution was proven in several studies, especially with respect to release of particulate emissions containing metals. Not too many researchers pay attention to volatile organic compounds formation during braking, although it is very relevant topic. When organic friction materials are used, the oxidative processes and thermal degradation always accompanies the friction processes during braking. A low-metallic, brake lining formulation was tested using the ISO 26867 friction evaluation standard procedure in an automotive full-scale brake dynamometer. Sampling of non-airborne debris, suspended airborne particles (PM10) and air was performed directly in the environmental chamber. Released volatiles and semi volatile organics were analyzed using GC/MS, Pyr/GC/MS, FTIR and carbon phase analysis. Occurrence of important groups of volatile organic compounds as PAHs and BTEXs with possible adverse effects on living organisms was confirmed.

Effect of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi inoculation on root traits and root volatile organic compound emissions of Sorghum bicolor

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) emitted by plant roots have important functions that can influence the rhizospheric environment. The aim of this study was to examine the effects of arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi on the profile of root VOCs. Sorghum (Sorghum bicolor) plants were grown in pots inoculated with either Glomus mosseae or Glomus intraradices, which formed mycorrhiza with the roots. Control plants were grown in pots inoculated with sterile inoculum and did not form mycorrhiza. Forty-four VOCs were determined using headspace solid-phase microextraction (HS-SPME) and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). Alkanes were the most abundant type of VOCs emitted by both mycorrhizal and non-mycorrhizal plants. Both the quantity and type of volatiles were dramatically altered by the presence of AM fungi, and these changes had species specificity. Compared with non-mycorrhizal plants, mycorrhizal plants emitted more alcohols, alkenes, ethers and acids but fewer linear-alkanes. The AM fungi also influenced the morphological traits of the host roots. The total root length and specific root length of mycorrhizal plants were significantly greater than those of non-mycorrhizal plants; however, both the incidence and length of root-hair were dramatically decreased. Our findings confirm that AM fungi can alter the profile of VOCs emitted by roots as well as the root morphology of sorghum plants, indicating that AM fungi have the potential to help plants adapt to and alter soil environments.

Synthesis and application of stable nitroxide free radicals fused with carbocycles and heterocycles

Stable nitroxide free radicals have traditionally been associated with 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine-1-oxyl (TEMPO) or its 4-substituted derivatives as relatively inexpensive and readily accessible compounds with limited possibilities for further chemical modification. Over the past two decades, there has been a resurgence of interest in stable free radicals with proper functionalization tuned for various applications. The objective of this review is to present recent results with synthetic methodologies to achieve stable nitroxide free radicals fused with aromatic carbocycles and heterocycles. There are two main approaches for accessing stable nitroxide free radicals fused with arenes, e.g., isoin-doline-like nitroxides: further functionalization and oxidation of phthalimide or inventive functionalization of pyrroline nitroxide key compounds. The latter also offers the con-structions of versatile heterocyclic scaffolds (furan, pyrrole, thiophene, 1,2-thiazole, selenophene, pyrazole, pyrimidine, pyridine, pyridazine, 1,5-benzothiazepine) that are fused with pyrroline or tetrahydropyridine nitroxide rings. The possible applications of these new stable nitroxide free radicals, such as covalent spin labels and noncovalent spin probes of proteins and nucleic acids, profluorescent probes, building blocks for construction of dual active drugs and electroactive materials, and substances for controlled free radical polymerization, are discussed.

The effect of intermolecular forces on the glass transition of solute-polymer blends: 2. Extension to different solutes

The effects of intermolecular forces on the glass transition temperature (Tg) of various dye solutes in numerous polymer matrices have been investigated. The Tgs of these dye-polymer blends were found to depend on the polymer Tg, the dye Tg, their relative concentrations and the dye-polymer affinity. Attempts have been made to correlate increases in Tg with dye-polymer affinity using solubility parameters as a predictive tool. Poor correlations were obtained using global solubility parameters. Excellent correlations were made between elevation in Tg and enhanced dye-polymer affinity using averaged polar/hydrogen bonding solubility parameters. For all dye solutes, the Tg was low when there was a large mismatch in solubility parameters, increased as dye and polymer became more compatible and was at a maximum when the solubility parameters of both components were equal. The results also indicate that longer range polar and hydrogen bonding forces have a controlling influence on Tg.

Effect of power level on the microwave pyrolysis of tire powder

The pyrolytic performance of tire powder treated under different specific microwave powers (SMP), powers per 1?g sample, (9, 15, and 24?W/g) was investigated. The experimental results show that the pyrolysis level of tire powder was enhanced with increasing SMP. The maximum yields of liquid product (45%) and gas product (18.5%) were obtained at 15 and 24?W/g, respectively. In addition, the conversion rates of main organic elements transferred to three-phase products were calculated. All of the evolved gases were collected in successive gasbags, and 80% of the volumes were low-molecular-weight gases like H2, CH4 and C2H4; the fraction of gases generated increased with increasing SMP. The liquid products contained a large amount of aromatic hydrocarbons, and more limonene (nearly 10%) was produced in microwave pyrolysis than in conventional pyrolysis of tires. The proximate and ultimate analyses of the solid product showed a slight difference in composition as a function of SMP. Furthermore, there may be a competitive reaction between the sulfur release to the volatiles and sulfur fixation, forming ZnS; the amount of ZnS varied with SMP. The energy recovery was examined, which provides a useful measure of the energy efficiency of microwave pyrolysis process.
