The visible-light photoredox/[Co(III)] cocatalyzed dehydrogenative functionalization of cyclic and acyclic styryl derivatives with carboxylic acids is documented. The methodology enables the chemo- and regioselective allylic functionalization of styryl compounds, leading to allylic carboxylates (32 examples) under stoichiometric acceptorless conditions. Intermolecular as well as intramolecular variants are documented in high yields (up to 82%). A mechanistic rationale is also proposed on the basis of a combined experimental and spectroscopic investigation.

A molecular crystal of a 2-D hydrogen-bonded organic framework (HOF) undergoes an unusual structural transformation after solvent removal from the crystal pores during activation. The conformationally flexible host molecule, ABTPA, adapts its molecular conformation during activation to initiate a framework expansion. The microcrystalline activated phase was characterized by three-dimensional electron diffraction (3D ED), which revealed that ABTPA uses out-of-plane anthracene units as adaptive structural anchors. These units change orientation to generate an expanded, lower density framework material in the activated structure. The porous HOF, ABTPA-2, has robust dynamic porosity (SA(BET) = 1 183 m(2) g(-1)) and exhibits negative area thermal expansion. We use crystal structure prediction (CSP) to understand the underlying energetics behind the structural transformation and discuss the challenges facing CSP for such flexible molecules.

The degradation of organic contaminants in aquatic systems has raised immense attention worldwide, and the second-order rate constant (k(SO4)(-)) of water pollutants oxidized by sulfate radical anion is an important index for assessing the degradation efficiency of organics. Herein, a new norm mathematical formula is defined. Based on this, four new descriptors are proposed and a QSPR model is developed for predicting k(SO4)(-) using 30 families of emerging organic pollutants in water. The statistical results fully prove that this model has good fitting effect and stability with R-2 of 0.8862, Q(LOO)(2) of 0.8466, and Q(5-fold)(2) of 0.8329, respectively. The validation results including cross validation, applicability domain analysis, and model comparison show that this model has good robustness, predictive performance, and reliability. These decent results indicate that the new norm mathematical formula is effective in calculating descriptors and the norm indexes have a great application for evaluating the transformation fate of organic pollutants by sulfate radical in aquatic systems.

A novel palladium(II)/copper(II)-catalyzed sulfidation of the C-H bond in electron-rich arenes and in pentafluorobenzene with disulfides was developed. Two series of polymethoxychalcones and polymethoxyflavones, including the natural products 2-hydroxy-3,4,5,4,6-pentamethoxychalcone (8c), 5,6,7,8,3,4,5-heptamethoxyflavone (6), 5,7,3,4,5-pentamethoxyflavone (9c), 3-hydroxy-5,6,7,8,3,4,5-heptamethoxyflavone (7), and 3-hydroxy-5,7,3,4,5-pentamethoxyflavone (10), were synthesized. The antiproliferative activity in vitro was evaluated against a panel of three human cancer cell lines (HeLa, HCC1954, and SK-OV-3) by the cell counting kit-8 (CCK-8) assay. The results showed that most of the synthetic compounds exhibited moderate to potent antiproliferative activities. Some compounds displayed equal or higher potential than the positive control drug cisplatin. In particular, compounds 4c, 4e, 8a, and 9a possess IC50 values equal to or below 10 M and are worthy of further investigation.

Cooperative bimetallic catalysis is a fundamental approach in modern synthetic chemistry. We report bimetallic cooperative catalysis for the direct decarbonylative heteroarylation of ubiquitous carboxylic acids via acyl C-O/C-H coupling. This novel catalytic system exploits the cooperative action of a copper catalyst and a palladium catalyst in decarbonylation, which enables highly chemoselective synthesis of important heterobiaryl motifs through the coupling of carboxylic acids with heteroarenes in the absence of prefunctionalization or directing groups. This cooperative decarbonylative method uses common carboxylic acids and shows a remarkably broad substrate scope (>70 examples), including late-stage modification of pharmaceuticals and streamlined synthesis of bioactive agents. Extensive mechanistic and computational studies were conducted to gain insight into the mechanism of the reaction. The key step involves intersection of the two catalytic cycles via transmetallation of the copper-aryl species with the palladium(II) intermediate generated by oxidative addition/decarbonylation.

The reaction proceeds via an electron donor-acceptor (EDA) complex between an electron-rich arene substrate and electron-poor persulfate oxidant. C(sp(3))-H arylation of the amide occurs selectively with the most electron-rich arene of the substrate.
