Flavin-based catalysts are photoactive in the visible range which makes them useful in biology and chemistry. Herein, we present electrospray-ionization mass-spectrometry detection of short-lived intermediates in photooxidation of toluene catalysed by flavinium ions (Fl(+)). Previous studies have shown that photoexcited flavins react with aromates by proton-coupled electron transfer (PCET) on the microsecond time scale. For Fl(+), PCET leads to FlH(.+) with the H-atom bound to the N5 position. We show that the reaction continues by coupling between FlH(.+) and hydroperoxy or benzylperoxy radicals at the C4a position of FlH(.+). These results demonstrate that the N5-blocking effect reported for alkylated flavins is also active after PCET in these photocatalytic reactions. Structures of all intermediates were fully characterised by isotopic labelling and by photodissociation spectroscopy. These tools provide a new way to study reaction intermediates in the sub-second time range.

Direct C-S bond coupling is an attractive way to construct aryl sulfur ether, a building block for a variety of biological active molecules. Herein, we disclose an effective model for regioselective thiolation of the aromatic C-H bond by thiol activation instead of arene activation. Strikingly, this method has been applied into anisole derivatives that are not available in the arene activation approach to forge a single thioether isomer with high reactivity.

A novel one-pot reaction of carboxylic acids, ynol ethers, and m-CPBA for the synthesis of alpha-carbonyloxy esters in the presence of Ag2O is described. This process provides a direct approach to alpha-carbonyloxy esters with the achievement of formation of three C-O bonds. The protocol is featured with readily available starting materials and broad substrate scope. Control reactions and isotope-labeling reactions were conducted to elucidate a plausible mechanism.

The reaction of TMS-ethers of 2,4-diaryl-1,1,1-trifluorobut-3-en-2-ols with arenes in TfOH at room temperature for 5 min results in the formation of trans-/cis-1,3-diaryl-1-trifluoromethyl indanes in good yields (up to 99%). The predominant or exclusive formation of indanes with a trans-configuration of 1,3-diaryl groups has been observed. The reaction proceeds through an intermediate formation of the corresponding mesomeric CF3-allyl cations. A plausible reaction mechanism is discussed.

Current industrial processes utilize Co/Mn bromides as catalysts to catalyze the oxidative conversion of para-xylene to terephthalic acid (TA) in acetic acid at high temperatures (>200 degrees C, air, 15-30 atm.). The decomposition of metallo-catalysts and solvents at high temperatures as well as a subsequent hydropurification process releases thousands of millions of tons of wastewater, global warming gas (CO2) and ozone depleting gas (CH3Br) into the global environment per year, causing global warming, ozone depletion, dramatic climate change, huge economic losses, and many other environmental problems. Herein, we report an alternative sustainable process with low energy demand for the room temperature oxidative conversion of p-xylene to terephthalic acid, with 96% TA yield and 98% selectivity, via ozone treatment and concurrent UV irradiation and without the generation and release of greenhouse gas (CO2), ozone depleting gas (CH3Br), and wastewater, or the need for a high energy-demand hydropurification process. The reaction mechanism involves the singlet O(D-1)- and hydroxyl radical-mediated selective C-H functionalization of p-xylene.

A general and practical protocol for the construction of isoxazolidine-fused isoquinolin-1(2H)-ones has been described by electrochemical-oxidation-induced intramolecular annulation via amidyl radicals.
