The synthesis, as well as spectral, structural and photoluminescence properties of dipyrido[3,2-e:2 ‘,3 ‘-h]acenaphthene 5 and quinazolino[7,8-h]quinazolines 6 as representatives of the bidentate -N=/-N= superbases, are reported. These nitrogen bases being more rigid (5) or pi-extended (6) analogs of optically-mute quino[7,8-h]quinoline are both active in terms of fluorescence with quantum yields up to phi = 0.71-0.77. At the same time, their luminescence behavior is opposite to that of peri-NMe2/NMe2 naphthalene proton sponges and their hybrid NMe2/-NMe2 analogs. Although 5 and 6 exhibit visible region emission upon protonation, for the hybrid systems the fluorescence is manifested only for bases. The most remarkable observation is that the fluorescence of compound 5 can be switched on not only by means of organic or inorganic acids, but also through the formation of chelate complexes with such weak H-donors as water and primary alcohols. It was disclosed that water is present in the complex as a cluster comprising 8 interconnected H2O molecules. Overall, the studied compounds demonstrate a previously unobserved type of dual mode optical response, H-sensing (emission enhancement in 5 and 6 on protonation) and pi-sensing (emission quenching in 5H(+) and 6H(+) on coordination with pi-donors). This work seems to be an important contribution to areas such as chemosensorics, the creation of new ligands, hydrogen transfer and some other phenomena representing different types of supramolecular interactions.

A series of 15 novel 1,3,4-thiadiazole amide derivatives containing a protocatechuic acid moiety were synthesized and structurally characterized. In addition, the corresponding imino (4) and amino (5) analogues of a phenyl-substituted 1,3,4-thiadiazole amide derivative 3a were prepared to compare the effects of the structural changes on the radical-scavenging activity. The obtained compounds were examined for their antioxidative potential by 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) and 2,2′-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) (ABTS) assays. In addition, selected compounds were studied by density functional theory (DFT) and cyclic voltammetry experiments. The tested compounds showed high potential to scavenging DPPH radical and ABTS radical cation compared with the referent antioxidants ascorbic acid and nordihydroguaiaretic acid (NDGA). On the basis of the calculated thermodynamic parameters, it can be concluded that the sequential proton loss electron transfer (SPLET) mechanism represents the most probable reaction path in a polar solvent for DPPH radical-scavenging activity. On the other hand, the single electron transfer followed by proton transfer (SET-PT) can be a likely mechanistic pathway in the case of an ABTS radical cation. (C) 2019 Academie des sciences. Basicity is an important parameter with impact on biological systems and technological problems. The HOMO-LUMO and FERMO theoretical approaches can describe the acid-base behavior of compounds as amines, carboxylic acids and alcohols. In this work, a method was developed using the localization degree Gamma(FERMO) parameter based on projection operators to quantify the localization of molecular orbitals. This new method was employed for the analysis of the protonation reaction of 30 organic compounds. The quantitative data from our findings were able to reproduce experimental data, pointing out that the FERMO approach could better describe the acid-base behavior of the investigated compounds.

The development of a novel chemoselective functionalization can diversify the strategy for synthesizing the target molecules. The perfect chemoselectivity between aromatic and aliphatic aldehydes is difficult to achieve by the previous methods. The aromatic aldehyde-selective nucleophilic addition in the presence of aliphatic aldehydes was newly accomplished. Namely, the aromatic aldehyde-selective nucleophilic addition using arenes and allyl silanes proceeded in the presence of trialkylsilyl triflate and 2,2′-bipyridyl, while the aliphatic aldehydes completely remained unchanged. The reactive pyridinium-type salt intermediate derived from an aromatic aldehyde chemoselectively underwent the nucleophilic substitution. Moreover, the aromatic acetals as the protected aldehydes could be directly transformed into similar pyridinium salt intermediates, which reacted with various nucleophiles coexisting with the aliphatic aldehydes.

This study presents a method to calculate the surface tension of a wide variety of organic carboxylic-based acids molecules starting from the experimental data of the liquid viscosity. The first step of this research was a data collection and then an accurate selection of experimental sources for the calculation of surface tension. Besides, in order to build two different but comparable databanks, the experimental points were regressed with simple equations at the same reduced temperature range, spanning from 0.35 to 0.75. As a final step, the original relationship of Pelofsky between the natural logarithm of surface tension and the inverse of viscosity was changed to better describe the property under investigation. The simple modification of adding the reduced temperature allowed to achieve an MD of 1.24% for the whole dataset that contains 22 fluids with 170 surface tension data and 379 liquid viscosity experimental data. Perovskite crystal grain size control, grain boundary passivation, and grain bridging are the keys to obtaining high efficiency in perovskite solar cells. A small amount of semi-conducting single-walled carbon nanotubes added to a perovskite active layer can achieve this. In particular, the surfactants attached to the semiconducting single-walled carbon nanotubes a crucial role. In this work, we synthesized a new surfactant, 4,6-di(anthracen-9-yl)-1,3-phenylene bis(dimethylcarbamate), which has a polyaromatic group on one end and a urea-analogue carbamate group on the other end. The polyaromatic anthracene end functions as a nanotweezer clenching the carbon nanotubes strongly via pi-pi interaction while the carbamate end interacts with Pb2+, functioning as a strong Lewis base. In addition, the new surfactant has conjugated double bonds with a suitable bandgap, resulting in enhanced charge mobility in the perovskite film. Overall, the new surfactant-clenched semiconducting carbon nanotubes showcase superior effectiveness as passivators and charge bridges in perovskite solar cells as compared to the conventional deoxycholate surfactant-wrapped semiconducting single-walled carbon nanotubes. The new surfactant-attached semiconducting carbon nanotube-added NH3CH3PbI3-based perovskite solar cells exhibited a power conversion efficiency of 20.7%, which is higher than that of the reference devices with no additives (18.4%) and the previously reported semiconducting single-walled carbon nanotube-added devices (19.7% in this work and 19.5% in the literature).
