Picolinamide group assisted sp(3) C-H bond oxidation of methylene groups to the corresponding carbonyl compounds has been achieved by using simple bottle ferrocene as catalyst and Cu(OAc)(2) or tert-butyl peroxybenzoate (TBPB) as oxidant under mild conditions. This method is applicable for picolinamide bound organic as well as organometallic compounds with yields in the range of 46-82%. Control experiments and mechanistic studies indicate that a radical mechanism is responsible for these oxidative transformations in which ferrocene acts as a catalyst.

We report the magnesiation of aryl fluorides catalyzed by an Al-Rh heterobimetallic complex. We show that the complex is highly reactive to cleave the C-F bonds across the polarized Al-Rh bond under mild conditions. The reaction allows the use of an easy-to-handle magnesium powder to generate a range of arylmagnesium reagents from aryl fluorides, which are conventionally inert to such metalation compared with other aryl halides.

In this communication, we describe a new method for the carbonylative synthesis of acylstannanes from aryl iodides and hexamethyldistannane. With Pd(PPh3)(4) as the catalyst and toluene as the solvent at 60 degrees C under 10 bar CO for 16 h, the desired acylstannanes were obtained in good to excellent yields. An investigation of the unexpected lability of the Csp(3)-Csp(2)bond connecting 2,4,6-trimethoxyphenyl group and an allylic moiety is carried out. We observed that the catalytic presence of either Lewis or Bronsted acid can render such 2,4,6-trimethoxyphenyl group labile. Several nucleophiles were found to substitute the labile C-C bond in mild reaction conditions resulting in very good yields of the allylated products. Even in the absence of a nucleophile, intramolecular cyclization of the parent substrate under acidic activation caused the labile C-C bond to cleave. A major motivation of this study is to understand the lability of electron-rich aryl group in acidic medium, employing 2,4,6-trimethoxyphenyl moiety as a case study. A plausible mechanism is proposed after carrying out several control reactions as well as UV/Vis and(1)H NMR spectroscopic studies. This work provides an insight into the activation of electron-rich arenes as a labile entity in acidic medium while also adding a conceptually novel C-C bond breaking approach to the vast literature of allylation of arenes.

Ir-catalyzed cascade dehydrogenative CH/BH and BH/OH cross-coupling of carboranyl carboxylic acid with readily available benzoic acid has been achieved, leading to the facile synthesis of previously unavailable carborano-coumarin in a simple one-pot process. Two cage B-H, one aryl C-H and one O-H bonds are activated to construct efficiently new B-C and B-O bonds. The cascade cyclization can stop at the first B-H/C-H cross-coupling step by tuning the reaction conditions, resulting in a series of alpha-carboranyl benzoic acid and aryl carborane derivatives. Control experiments indicate that B-H/C-H dehydrocoupling proceeds preferentially over B-H/O-H dehydrocoupling, and both directing groups and oxidants are crucial for this reaction. An iridium(V) intermediate is proposed to be involved in the catalytic cycle.
