Although methyl transfer reactions are important in both chemical and biological systems, there is a need for thermodynamic parameters related to methyl affinity and O-CH3 bond dissociation enthalpies (BDEs) relevant to a full understanding of the mechanisms of methyl transfer reactions. As a prelude to the construction of a database of O-CH3 BDEs, the present work examines the reliability of a series of theoretical methods for the prediction of O-CH3 BDEs using a set of 25 compounds that included both aromatic and non-aromatic molecules. The BDEs calculated by density functional theory (DFT) with traditional exchange-correlation functions exhibited much larger errors than those obtained by either the M06-2X or G4 methods. For the non-aromatic compounds, M06-2X/def2-TZVP performed slightly better than G4, but G4 was more accurate for the aromatic molecules. As a result, we recommend G4 as the preferred method for the theoretical estimation of O-CH3 bond dissociation enthalpies, although M06-2X may be a good alternative for large complex molecules when the use of G4 is impractical.

Taking natural product phenazine-1-carboxamide (PCN) as a lead compound, a series of novel phenazine-1-carboxylic acid diamide derivatives were designed and synthesised. Their structures were confirmed by H-1-NMR and HRMS. The bioassays showed that some of the target compounds exhibited promising in vitro fungicidal activities, and exhibited excellent and selective herbicidal activities. Particularly, compounds c, h, o and s displayed root length inhibition activities against barnyard grass with the rate of more than 80%. Compound c exhibited the best activity among all the target compounds against barnyard grass stalk length with the IC50 value of 0.158 mmol/L, and compound o exhibited the best and wide spectrum inhibition against barnyard grass root length and rape in both root length and stalk length herbicidal activities with its IC50 values of 0.067, 0.048 and 0.059 mmol/L respectively. The analysis of preliminary Structure-Activity Relationships provides the theoretical basis for further design of phenazine-1-carboxylic acid. [GRAPHICS] .

A room temperature ammonia gas sensor has been fabricated by depositing the thin film of Functionalized Graphene Oxide (GO) using Langmuir Blodgett (LB) technique on SiO2/Si wafers. Thermal evaporation technique was used for deposition of aluminum (Al) contacts for measuring the resistance of fabricated thin film. Different concentration of Meta Toluic acid (15 mM, 50 mM, 75 mM) has been used for functionalization of GO. X-Ray Diffraction (XRD), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and Raman spectroscopy were used to characterize the Graphene Oxide (GO) after functionalization. Also, Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) was carried out for bothGO and functionalized GO. Gas sensing behavior of functionalized GO has been investigated for different concentration of ammonia gas. Sensor response was studied for low concentration (100 ppm) of ammonia gas. Highest response at 100 ppm concentration was found to be similar to 12%. Higher concentration of MTA in GO leads to higher response of ammonia gas. This enhanced gas response is attributed to the enhanced ester formation reaction at the surface of sensing film, and more defects and carbon vacancy in functionalized GO, which eventually leads to more interaction with NH3 gas molecules.

A palladium-catalyzed N-acylation of tertiary amines by carboxylic acids was achieved through C-N cleavage. This reaction showed a wide substrate scope. Both aromatic and aliphatic acids served well as the acylating reagents and coupled with tertiary amines to produce the corresponding amides in good to excellent yields. With the strategy, bioactive carboxylic acids were also efficiently modified, highlighting the synthetic value of the process in organic synthesis.

A trifluoroacetic-acid-mediated desulfurilative sulfonylthiolation of arenes using SS-morpholino dithiosulfonate is described. This system is based on selective activation of the morpholino group over the tosyl group of the doubly transformable sulfur surrogate. Mechanistic studies suggested that the reaction proceeds through electrophilic aromatic substitution followed by sulfur extrusion. The wide substrate scope of this reaction and the transformability of the resulting thiosulfonates enable expeditious access to divergent multifunctionalized sulfides.

Sodium is the most abundant alkali metal in the Earth’s crust and the ocean. However, organosodium compounds have long been considered inferior to organolithium compounds, which have instead dominated synthetic organic chemistry during the last century. Despite being largely neglected because of their reactive nature, it is worth re-exploring organosodium chemistry, in light of the growing demand for sustainable syntheses without recourse to less abundant elements such as lithium. Herein, we demonstrate that, contrary to common belief, organosodium compounds can be easily prepared from aryl chlorides or (hetero) arenes and easy-to-handle sodium dispersion and, after being transmetallated to the corresponding zinc and boron compounds, they readily participate in the Negishi and Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling reactions, fundamental carbon-carbon bond-forming reactions in organic synthesis. Direct coupling reactions with organosodium species were also possible.

Picolinamide group assisted sp(3) C-H bond oxidation of methylene groups to the corresponding carbonyl compounds has been achieved by using simple bottle ferrocene as catalyst and Cu(OAc)(2) or tert-butyl peroxybenzoate (TBPB) as oxidant under mild conditions.
