Cyperus esculentus tubers are the raw material to prepare tigernut milk (horchata), which can be marketed under Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) C hufa de Valencia. The aim of this study was to characterize commercial tigernut milks and compare PDO and non-PDO products. The following aspects were studied: (i) volatile profile, (ii) descriptive sensory profile, (iii) consumer satisfaction degree. The key volatile compounds were limonene, benzaldehyde, linalool and m-methoxyanisole. Principal component analysis indicated a mix of PDO and nonPDO samples in the groups formed. The highest consumer satisfactions were observed for 2 PDO samples. Penalty analysis showed that 80% of non-PDO samples needed improvements, while this percentage drastically decreased to 40% for PDO samples. The online study proved that a lot of people drink horchata, less people know the PDO Chufa de Valencia and even less people consume the protected product consciously. In conclusion, there was not a clear difference among protected and non-protected tigernut milks respect to volatile compounds but there were differences in the degree of consumer preference. So, it is clear that a lack of knowledge regarding the product and its PDO exists and needs attention.

A metal- and oxidant-free electrochemical synthesis of aryl sulfides was developed through a C-H sulfidation reaction of arenes and disulfides. Compared with traditional organic synthesis methods, this direct electrochemical approach efficiently generates aryl sulfides under catalyst- and oxidant-free conditions with the superiorities of wide substrate compatibility, mild reaction condition and waster free. At room temperature, various aryl thiols could be transformed smoothly in an undivided cell. Based on cyclic voltammetry (CV) and control experiments, the possible reaction mechanism was also proposed. The gram-scale synthesis emphasizes the practicability of this electrochemical strategy. The electrochemical-induced C-H methylthiolation of electron-rich aromatics has been accomplished via a three component cross-coupling strategy. Potassium thiocyanate (KSCN) as both the supporting electrolyte and sulfur source and methanol as the methylation reagent are used. This protocol is versatile for various (hetero)aromatic compounds such as aniline, anisole and indole. The reaction proceeds under mild conditions without any metal catalyst, exogenous oxidant and highly toxic sulfur reagent. Importantly, such an electrochemical-induced methylthiolated reaction could be easily scaled up with good efficiency.

Semivolatile organic compounds (SVOCs) emitted from open biomass burning (BB) can contribute to chemical and physical properties of atmospheric aerosols and also may cause adverse health effects. The polar fraction of SVOCs is a prominent part of BB organic aerosols, and thus it is important to characterize the chemical composition and reactivity of this fraction. In this study, globally and regionally important representative fuels (Alaskan peat, Moscow peat, Pskov peat, eucalyptus, Malaysian peat, and Malaysian agricultural peat) were burned under controlled conditions using the combustion chamber facility at the Desert Research Institute (DRI). Gas- and particle-phase biomass-burning emissions were aged in an oxidation flow reactor (OFR) to mimic 5-7 d of atmospheric aging. Fresh and OFR-aged biomass-burning aerosols were collected on Teflonimpregnated glass fiber filters (TIGF) in tandem with XAD resin media for organic carbon speciation. The polar fraction extracted with dichloromethane and acetone was analyzed with gas chromatography mass spectrometry (GC-MS) for 84 polar organic compounds – including mono- and dicarboxylic acids, methoxylated phenols, aromatic acids, anhydrosugars, resin acids, and sterols. For all these compounds, fuel-based emission factors (EFs) were calculated for fresh and OFR-aged samples. The carbon mass of the quantified polar compounds was found to constitute 5 % to 7 % of the total organic compound mass. A high abundance of methoxyphenols (239 mg kg(-1) for Pskov peat; 22.6 % of total GC-MS characterized mass) and resin acids (118 mg kg(-1) for Alaskan peat; 14.5 % of total GC-MS characterized mass) was found in peat-burning emissions (smoldering combustion). The concentration of some organic compounds (e.g., tetracosanoic acid) with a molecular weight (MW) above 350 g mol(-1) decreased after OFR aging, while abundances of low-MW compounds (e.g., hexanoic acid) increased. This indicated a significant extent of fragmentation reactions in the OFR. Methoxyphenols decreased after OFR aging, while a significant increase (3.7 to 8.6 times) in the abundance of dicarboxylic acids emission factors (EFs), especially maleic acid (10 to 60 times), was observed. EFs for fresh and ratios from fresh-to-aged BB samples reported in this study can be used to perform source apportionment and predict processes occurring during atmospheric transport.

Sulfuric acid and aromatic compounds are abundant in the atmosphere and play an important role in aerosol nucleation and growth. The main objective of this work is to provide molecular level description of pre-nucleation clusters formed by these species. Our approach is based on size- and compositionselective generation of anionic clusters, consisting of sulfuric acid and series of aromatic carboxylates (ArCOO-; Ar =Phenyl, o-, m-, and p-CH3C6H4 ), and their subsequent characterization using photoelectron spectroscopy and quantum chemical calculations. The photoelectron spectra show that formation of these clusters is accompanied by a significant increase of electron binding energies, implying significant stabilization gained from electron delocalization upon complexation. Comparison between the experimental and calculated results suggests that under low temperature conditions these clusters behave more like a complex of sulfuric acid and aromatic carboxylate, (H2SO4)(ArCOO-), despite the fact that ArCOO- has much higher proton affinity than HSO4-. Similar result has been previously reported for sulfuric acid formate cluster [Hou, Wang, and Valiev, J. Am. Chem. Soc. 139 (2017) 11321-11324], and indicates that interaction energy gained though the formation of these clusters is sufficient to counteract proton affinity imbalance. The calculated intermolecular binding energies (BEs), Gibbs free energies (Delta G), and evaporation rates (gamma) show that these (H2SO4)(ArCOO- ) clusters are extremely stable, with BEs of similar to 54 kcal/mol, Delta G of similar to-40 kcal/mol, and gamma of 10(-20) s(-1) . The experimental and computational results reported in this work suggest that aromatic acids may play a significant role in facilitating the early stages of sulfuric acid nucleation. SCM-198 (Leonurine) has attracted great attention due to its cardioprotective effects in myocardial infarction (MI). However, no systematic modifications and structure-activity relationship (SAR) studies could be traced so far. In this study, 35 analogs of SCM-198 were designed, synthesized and their cardioprotective effects were evaluated. The cell viability assay on cardiomyocyte cell line H9c2 challenged with H2O2 showed that several analogs exhibited more potent cytoprotective effects than SCM-198 at 1 mu M and 10 mu M concentrations. LDH release level in cells treated with 1 mu M 14o was comparable with cells treated with 10 mu M SCM-198. Results of Bcl-2 expression and caspase-3 activation accordingly indicated higher protective activity of 14o than SCM-198. Moreover, in a mouse model of MI, the mice pretreated with 14o had much lower infarct size compared with that of SCM-198. The mechanism study suggested that 14o improved cardiac morphology and reduced apoptosis of cardiomyocytes in the border zone of infarction, as proved by H&E and TUNEL staining. Chemical synthesis was used for the functionalization of graphene oxide using Meta toluic acid. Various covalent and non covalent attachments of functional groups were used for surface modification of GO due to the presence of oxygen groups on the surface of GO. Modified graphene oxide was obtained by esterification reaction. The characterization of GO and modified GO (FGO) was done using X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infra red spectroscopy (FTIR), Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). Modification of Graphene oxide was confirmed by peak shifting in XRD pattern and new bond attached in FTIR spectra as compared with GO. SEM, TGA and dispersion characterization was done to observe the change in characteristics properties of modified GO. SEM analysis was used to observe the change in morphology of graphene oxide. TGA was used to study the decomposition of the material as a function of temperature. The FGO was completely soluble in methanol, propan-1-ol, DMF, acetone, ethanol and DMSO which shows that FGO have good dispersible properties and may find its application in various fields like gas and humidity sensors.
