A palladium-catalysed direct alkenation of electron rich arenes in the presence of K2S2O8 with an acetic acid/1,4-dioxane solvent combination has been developed. The 1,4-dioxane co-solvent dramatically influences the rate of reaction, giving selectively disubstituted alkenes, while the addition of acetylacetone ligands was shown to increase site selectivity for the alkenation of monofunctionalized arenes. The participation of these carbonyl ligands has been confirmed by ESI-MS studies, with some key in situ intermediates in the catalytic cycle identified. A variety of electron rich arenes and olefinic substrates can be utilised in the direct oxidative coupling to give disubstituted alkenes in moderate to good yields. (C) 2019 Elsevier Ltd. Electrospray ionization (ESI) is widely used as an ionization source for the analysis of complex mixtures by mass spectrometry. However, different compounds ionize more or less effectively in the ESI source, meaning instrument responses can vary by orders of magnitude, often in hard-to-predict ways. This precludes the use of ESI for quantitative analysis where authentic standards are not available. Relative ionization efficiency (RIE) scales have been proposed as a route to predict the response of compounds in ESL In this work, a scale of RIEs was constructed for 51 carboxylic acids, spanning a wide range of additional functionalities, to produce a model for predicting the RIE of unknown compounds. While using a limited number of compounds, we explore the usefulness of building a predictor using popular supervised regression techniques, encoding the compounds as combinations of different structural features using a range of common fingerprints. It was found that Bayesian ridge regression gives the best predictive model, encoding compounds using features designed for activity coefficient models. This produced a predictive model with an R-2 score of 0.62 and a root-mean-square error (RMSE) of 0.362. Such scores are comparable to those obtained in previous studies but without the requirement to first measure or predict the physical properties of the compounds, potentially reducing the time required to make predictions.

An approach for the calculation of the vaporization enthalpies of aromatic and heteroaromatic compounds at T = 298.15 K with accuracy competitive with experiment was proposed. The vaporization enthalpies may be calculated from the solution enthalpies of liquid and solvation enthalpies in benzene. The solution enthalpies of liquids were shown to be constant within a given type of aromatic compounds. For a set of 67 liquid and 41 solid aromatic and heteroaromatic compounds not capable of intermolecular hydrogen bonding, it was experimentally demonstrated that the solution enthalpies of liquids or supercooled liquids in benzene were equal to 1 +/- 1 kJ . mol(-1). The way to consider intermolecular hydrogen bonding, e.g., in phenol, aniline, pyrrole derivatives, was also proposed. The methods for solvation enthalpy calculation were proposed previously. The calculated and literature vaporization enthalpies values of 415 aromatic and heteroaromatic compounds were compared. Average absolute deviation amounted to 1.3 kJ . mol(-1). The proposed approach is especially valuable for calculation of the vaporization enthalpies of low-volatile compounds, including those solid at T = 298.15 K. (C) 2020 Elsevier B.V. Cyperus esculentus tubers are the raw material to prepare tigernut milk (horchata), which can be marketed under Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) C hufa de Valencia. The aim of this study was to characterize commercial tigernut milks and compare PDO and non-PDO products. The following aspects were studied: (i) volatile profile, (ii) descriptive sensory profile, (iii) consumer satisfaction degree. The key volatile compounds were limonene, benzaldehyde, linalool and m-methoxyanisole. Principal component analysis indicated a mix of PDO and nonPDO samples in the groups formed. The highest consumer satisfactions were observed for 2 PDO samples. Penalty analysis showed that 80% of non-PDO samples needed improvements, while this percentage drastically decreased to 40% for PDO samples. The online study proved that a lot of people drink horchata, less people know the PDO Chufa de Valencia and even less people consume the protected product consciously. In conclusion, there was not a clear difference among protected and non-protected tigernut milks respect to volatile compounds but there were differences in the degree of consumer preference. So, it is clear that a lack of knowledge regarding the product and its PDO exists and needs attention.

2-Pyridyl ketones widely appear in bioactive molecules, natural products, and are employed as precursors of chiral 2-pyridine alky/aryl alcohols or 2-aminoalkyl pyridine ligands for asymmetric catalysis. A versatile synthetic protocol of aza-Friedel-Crafts alkylation has been developed for the synthesis of quaternary alpha-amino esters. This operationally simple alkylation proceeds under ambient conditions with high efficiency, regioselectivity, and an exceptionally broad scope of arene nucleophiles. A key feature of this alkylation is the role associated with the silver(I) salt counteranions liberated during the reaction. Taking advantage of a phase-transfer counteranion/Bronsted acid pair mechanism, we also report a catalytic enantioselective example of the reaction.

Information obtained from biodegradability tests, e.g. half-life (t(50)) or kinetics parameters, is relevant in environmental risk assessment of new chemicals. In these tests, the removal of the tested compound is measured over a prefixed period of time (e.g. 28 days in ready biodegradability tests) to derive a substrate depletion curve. The implementation can be time-consuming, costly and difficult, especially when the complexity of the environmental compartment increases. In this work, the possibility of obtaining a full biodegradation depletion curve from a single biodegradation-time experimental data point (‘single-data’ strategy) was evaluated. Monod kinetics are assumed to avoid the limitations related to first-order kinetics (only valid for very low substrate concentrations). Experimental and simulated data were used to illustrate the potential of the proposed strategy. The effects on the estimates of several variables (e.g. Monod kinetics parameters, compound concentration or variability in biodegradation data) and the errors introduced to some of the variables were also evaluated. The results suggest that the proposed strategy can be used as a rapid (based on data measured at day 7) and low-cost screening approach to anticipate the result of a biodegradability test for new chemicals. The applicability and practical limitations of the ‘single-data’ strategy have been illustrated using experimental data for several compounds ranging from readily biodegradable (e.g. benzoic acid, acetylsalicylic acid, p-toluic acid) to potentially persistent compounds (e.g. bupivacaine, p-phenitidine, phtadinitrile).

The firstN-bromosuccinimide (NBS)-promoted transition metal-free cross-dehydrogenative esterification of carboxylic acids with dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) has been disclosed for formal C-O formationviaPummerer-type rearrangement. These transformations employ readily available carboxylic acids as the nucleophile and DMSO as the sulfur-containing carbon source and solvent under mild conditions, affording valuable (methylsulfinyl)methyl esters with a broad substrate scope.
