Surface-confined synthesis is a promising approach to build complex molecular nanostructures including macrocycles. However, despite the recent advances in on-surface macro- cyclization under ultrahigh vacuum, selective synthesis of monodisperse and multicomponent macrocycles remains a challenge. Here, we report on an on-surface formation of [6 + 6] Schiff-base macrocycles via dynamic covalent chemistry. The macrocycles form two-dimensional crystalline domains on the micrometer scale, enabled by dynamic conversion of open-chain oligomers into well-defined similar to 3.0 nm hexagonal macrocycles. We further show that by tailoring the length of the alkyl substituents, it is possible to control which of three possible products-oligomers, macrocycles, or polymers-will form at the surface. In situ scanning tunneling microscopy imaging combined with density functional theory calculations and molecular dynamics simulations unravel the synergistic effect of surface confinement and solvent in leading to preferential on-surface macrocyclization.

It remains challenging to achieve the selective cleavage of C-C bonds in lignin or lignin model compounds to produce aromatic products in high yield and selectivity. We have developed a redox-neutral photocatalytic strategy to accomplish this goal in both beta-O-4 and beta-1 lignin models at room temperature (RT) via proton-coupled electron transfer (PCET) process without any pretreatments of substrate, by adjusting the alkalinity of base to obtain a lignin models/base PCET pair with a bond dissociation free energy close to 102 kcal/mol. Without breaking down C-beta-C-gamma bond and any C-O bonds, this PCET method is 100% atom economy and produces exclusive C-alpha-C-beta bond cleavage products, such as benzaldehydes (up to 97%) and phenyl ethers (up to 96%), in high to excellent yields and selectivities. Preliminary studies indicated that the PCET strategy is also effective for the depolymerization of native lignin at RT, thus providing significantly important foundation to the depolymerization of lignin. A mild one-pot protocol for the synthesis of symmetrical biaryls by sequential Ir-catalyzed C-H borylation and Cu-catalyzed homocoupling of arenes is described. The regiochemistry of the biaryl formed is sterically controlled as dictated by the C-H borylation step. The methodology is also successfully extended to heteroarenes. Some of the products obtained by this approach are impossible to obtain via the Ullmann or the Suzuki coupling protocols. Finally, we have shown a one-pot sequence describing C-H borylation/Cu-catalyzed homocoupling/Pd-catalyzed Suzuki coupling to obtain pi-extended arene frameworks.

An efficient method for the directing group controlled rhodium-catalyzed addition reaction of oxa/azabicylic alkenes with aromatic ketones and benzoic acids has been developed. The ketones and benzoic acids afforded different addition products when reacted with oxa/azabicyclic alkenes. The reaction between ketones and azabenzonorbornadienes furnished the ring-opening addition products. The reaction between benzoic acids and aza/oxabicyclic alkenes proceeded in the absence of silver salt, giving the 1:2 hydroarylation products in yields up to 96%.

A molecular crystal of a 2-D hydrogen-bonded organic framework (HOF) undergoes an unusual structural transformation after solvent removal from the crystal pores during activation. The conformationally flexible host molecule, ABTPA, adapts its molecular conformation during activation to initiate a framework expansion. The microcrystalline activated phase was characterized by three-dimensional electron diffraction (3D ED), which revealed that ABTPA uses out-of-plane anthracene units as adaptive structural anchors. These units change orientation to generate an expanded, lower density framework material in the activated structure. The porous HOF, ABTPA-2, has robust dynamic porosity (SA(BET) = 1 183 m(2) g(-1)) and exhibits negative area thermal expansion. We use crystal structure prediction (CSP) to understand the underlying energetics behind the structural transformation and discuss the challenges facing CSP for such flexible molecules.

A series of 15 novel 1,3,4-thiadiazole amide derivatives containing a protocatechuic acid moiety were synthesized and structurally characterized. In addition, the corresponding imino (4) and amino (5) analogues of a phenyl-substituted 1,3,4-thiadiazole amide derivative 3a were prepared to compare the effects of the structural changes on the radical-scavenging activity. The obtained compounds were examined for their antioxidative potential by 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) and 2,2′-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) (ABTS) assays. In addition, selected compounds were studied by density functional theory (DFT) and cyclic voltammetry experiments. The tested compounds showed high potential to scavenging DPPH radical and ABTS radical cation compared with the referent antioxidants ascorbic acid and nordihydroguaiaretic acid (NDGA). On the basis of the calculated thermodynamic parameters, it can be concluded that the sequential proton loss electron transfer (SPLET) mechanism represents the most probable reaction path in a polar solvent for DPPH radical-scavenging activity. On the other hand, the single electron transfer followed by proton transfer (SET-PT) can be a likely mechanistic pathway in the case of an ABTS radical cation. (C) 2019 Academie des sciences. An efficient and BF3 center dot Et2O-catalyzed chemoselective synthesis of diversified 1,3-diarylisobenzofuran in a high yield has been described. The reaction proceeds through sequential hydroarylation-cyclization between 2-formylarylketones and electron-rich arenes/heteroarenes. Advantageous features of the developed methodology include operational simplicity, a broad substrate scope, and applicability towards gram scale synthesis. The utility of isobenzofuran derivatives as the diene was extended to the synthesis of [4+2] cyclo-adducts with DMAD and the synthesis of 1,2-dicarbonylarenes in good yields.

We report an approach to the visible light-initiated, nickel-catalyzed esterification of carboxylic acids with aryl bromides. Thioxanthen-9-one works as a triplet photosensitizer to significantly accelerate this cross-coupling to provide aryl esters in moderate to excellent yields at room temperature. A mechanistic investigation indicates that this esterification undergoes the stepwise oxidative addition of an arylbromide to nickel, transmetalation of an aryl-Ni(ii) bromide complex, energy transfer from thioxanthen-9-one to an excited-state aryl-Ni(ii) carboxylate and reductive elimination to the aryl ester. This study contributes to the utilization of ketones as triplet photosensitisers in photochemical transformations.
