Concentrations, sulfur isotopic compositions and origin of organosulfur compounds in pore waters of a highly polluted raised peatland

Sulfur cycling in peatlands plays a key role in their response to atmospheric deposition of acid sulfate; however, the role of dissolved organic sulfur species has received little attention. In this study, we assess the quantitative importance of dissolved organic sulfur species in a heavily polluted peatland and their role in sulfur cycling. Surface and pore waters from a raised peat bog have been analyzed for dissolved organic and inorganic species. Except in the surface water, organically bound sulfur dominates over sulfate sulfur and the organosulfur is predominantly in the humic fraction, which is not GC amenable. Two organosulfur compounds are present in the GC amenable fraction at all depths; a compound containing a benzene ring, sulfone and amide groups dominates while a compound closely similar to either benzothiazole or 1,2-benzisothiazole is present at 100-1000 times lower concentrations. Other organosulfur species were detected in some samples by GC-AED (gas chromatography-atomic emission detection) at similar or yet lower concentrations but not identifiable with GC-MS. In the shallowest parts of the peat, sulfur isotopic data on the humic and non-humic dissolved organic sulfur fractions show a pronounced difference, implying different sources for these organosulfur compounds. Humic organosulfur is 34S enriched, indicating a source for this component from breakdown of plant materials, which have similar delta34S (0.1? and 4.2?). By contrast, the non-humic organosulfur is more 34S depleted at shallow depths (-11.7? in surface water), indicating an origin from reaction of bacterially produced sulfide (-9.9? in surface water) with dissolved organic material. Deeper in the peat the non-humic organosulfur becomes more 34S enriched (up to +6.8?), which may result from either: (i) reactions between organic material and more 34S enriched sulfide; or (less likely) (ii) a shift to production of non-humic organosulfur by breakdown of humic compounds or plant material in the peat matrix. These data highlight the importance of organosulfur species relative to inorganic species in peatland groundwaters. Organosulfur species comprise the bulk of the dissolved sulfur budget and are involved in the bacterial cycling of sulfur in the peatland ecosystem.

The evolution of products of tire powders, with special attention to the yields and composition over time under microwave pyrolysis, was studied. The solid, liquid, and gaseous products generated were all collected separately during the pyrolysis process and characterized. The difference of flavor profiles and physicochemical properties between the two types of raw soy sauces and heated soy sauces were investigated in the present research. The results indicated that no significant changes of physicochemical properties, organic acids (except succinic acid) or CIELAB color space among the samples after heat-treatment were observed. However, the content of volatiles was increased by about 30.89% in the fortified sample (PP1) by heat-treatment. The contents of 26 and 15 constituents in PP1 and PP2 (natural fermented sample) were enhanced compared with their respective control (P1 and P2), respectively. According to the changes of the constituents with odor activity value (OAV), the contribution of heat-treatment on soy sauce flavor profiles was related closely to the raw soy sauce type. The spicy, caramel-like and fruity note of heated soy sauces were higher than that of raw soy sauces, and the increasements of spicy, caramel-like and fruity note of PP1 were higher than that of PP2. These results may contribute to optimizing the heat-treatment parameters and improve the flavor of soy sauce.

Their relative predictive capabilities were then evaluated by comparing the obtained results with experimentally available data, namely the newly obtained IR spectra of MBID isolated in low-temperature inert matrices. For each method, different basis sets [6-31++G(d,p), 6-31++G(3df,3pd), 6-311++G(d,p), 6-311++G(2df,2pd), 6-311++G(3df,3pd), aug-cc-pVDZ and aug-cc-pVTZ] were considered. The best overall agreement has been achieved at the B3LYP/6-311++G(3df,3pd) and B3LYP/6-31++G(3df,3pd) levels of theory, showing the adequacy of the B3LYP functional to describe the investigated properties in this type of compounds and stressing the relevance of including high-order polarization functions in the basis set. The chosen level of theory [B3LYP/6-311++G(3df,3pd)] was applied to analyze the vibrational spectra and the geometry of the title molecule. In agreement with the experiment, the C{single bond}O{single bond}C linkage in MBID is predicted by these calculations to exhibit considerably short (1.320 A) and long (1.442 A) (N{double bond, long})C{single bond}O and (H3)C{single bond}O bonds, respectively, and a hybridization of the central oxygen atom close to sp2 (the C{single bond}O{single bond}C angle is predicted to be ca. 117). This C{single bond}O{single bond}C bonding pattern fits the well-known high reactivity of MBID upon thermal rearrangement, which has been shown to result in easy selective [1,3?]-isomerization of the compound.
