Phosphine mediated conjugation of S-nitrosothiols and aldehydes

S-Nitrosothiols (SNO) and their biological implications as an important post-translational modification are under active investigation. In our work on bioorthogonal reactions of protein SNO we have uncovered the chemistry of this functionality that shows synthetic promise. Herein we report a phosphine-mediated reaction between SNO and aldehydes to form thioimines. A simple synthesis of benzoisothiazole based on this reaction is presented.

Identification of Organic Compounds Released from Low-Metallic Automotive Model Brake Pad and its Non-Airborne Wear Particles

The brake wear contribution to the environmental pollution has been extensively discussed, with major focus on asbestos and heavy metals released to the environment. Only limited attention was paid to released organic compounds generated during friction processes, although the organic and carbonaceous components are not the minor part in brake lining formulations. Friction processes in brakes are associated with relatively high temperatures and high pressures on the friction surfaces which relates to the thermal decomposition of the organic components in friction materials and to brake lining thermal fade. Thus, this study focuses on the identification of organic compounds released from a model low metallic brake material. Several methods were used for the analysis: GC/MS screening of brake pad samples, brake wear debris and carbonaceous raw materials used in formulations of model pads; GC/MS screening of brake pad samples pyrolyzed at 300, 750, and 1000C, respectively, and FTIR analysis of brake pads and their wear debris. Higher quantity of organic compounds was identified in extract of the milled brake pad composite compared to the wear debris. More than 80 organic compounds were identified to be potentially released during braking. The major constituents were phenols, aliphatic and aromatic hydrocarbons, and their derivatives. Some of the identified compounds are known to have adverse effects even with mutagenic and carcinogenic potency to humans.

Characterization of Aroma Compounds in Two Meat Flavorings Prepared from Thermal Reaction of Enzymatic Hydrolysates of Black Pig and Common White Pig Meat Proteinss with Oxidized Lard

Meat flavorings were prepared by thermal reactions of enzymatic hydrolysates of black pig and common white pig (large white) meat proteins with oxidized lard. The volatile compounds of the two meat flavorings were analyzed by solvent assistant flavor distillation (SAFE) combined with gas chromatography and mass spectrometry (GC-MS). Based on retention indices and mass spectra, a total of 123 volatile compounds, including sulfur-containing compounds, nitrogencontaining heterocycles, oxygen-containing heterocycles, aldehydes, ketones, alcohols, acids, esters and hydrocarbons, were identified. In comparison, the white pig meat-derived flavoring had a greater percentage (relative to the total peak area) of alkyl furanes, aliphatic aldehydes and acids while the black pig meat-derived flavoring had a greater percentage of sulfur-containing compounds, nitrogen-containing heterocycles, and esters. However, their relative contents of ketones and alcohols were similar. Furthermore, by gas chromatography-olfactometry (GC-O), a total of 31 odor-active compounds were identified through comparison of their retention indices and odor characteristics with those of authentic standards. Among them, 28 compounds were common to two meat flavorings, and in particular dimethyltrisulfide, furfuryl mercaptan, 3-ethyl-2,5-dimethylpyrazine, 3-(methylthio) propanal,2-ethylthiophene,(E,E)-2,4-decadienal,(E)-2-decenal,(E)-2-nonenal,1-octen-3-ol and 3-hydroxy-2-butanone had high flavor dilution (FD) factors. However, the number of compounds with high FD values was greater in the black pig meat-derived flavoring than in the white pig meat-derived flavoring. Additionally, the spider-web plots for the potent odor-active compounds revealed that the black pig meat-derived flavoring had higher scores for meaty and fatty odors than the black pig meat-derived flavoring, which could explain why the black pig meat-derived flavoring had stronger meaty aroma than the black pig meat-derived flavoring.

Microwave-induced pyrolysis of waste truck tyres with carbonaceous susceptor for the production of diesel-like fuel

Microwave-induced pyrolysis technique was utilised to pyrolyse waste truck tyres (TT) into useful pyrolysis oil with the aid of activated carbon. The effect of temperature was studied to determine the truck-tyre pyrolysis oil (TTPO) yield, hydrocarbon fractions, chemicals composition, energy yield and fuel properties. The activated carbon functions as microwave absorber to elevate the pyrolysis temperature for enhancing production of pyrolysis oil. The optimal pyrolysis temperature of 500 C produces highest TTPO yield of 38.12 wt% with calorific value of 42.39 MJkg?1 and energy yield of 40.55 wt%. Detailed analysis shows the TTPO contained large amount of aromatic hydrocarbons and limonene (14.29%) compared to pyrolysis oil from personal car tyre. Among the important chemical compounds also discovered in TTPO are benzene, toluene, xylene (BTX). The relative yields of toluene obtained at 400 C is 14.85%, whereas the relative yields of benzene and xylene at 450 C were 0.85 and 7.60%, respectively. The physiochemical properties of TTPO500 are rather similar to conventional diesel, except the slightly lower flash point and calorific value for the former. This work shows that microwave-induced pyrolysis is a promising technique to recover diesel-like fuel for use as supplemental alternative fuel.
