A newly synthesized ligand derived from 2-amino thiophenol and benzoic anhydride and its Co(II), Cd(II), La(III) (in bulk and nano size), and Gd(III) complexes was investigated and characterized. The maximum elimination capacity of the newly synthesized ligand was investigated towards the removal of Co(II), Cd(II), La(III), and Gd(III) ions from aqueous solutions. It was found that the ligand has the best removal ability for Cd(II) metal of 98.66% at a concentration of 0.03 mg/L.

After the last epidemic of the Zika virus (ZIKV) in Brazil that peaked in 2016, growing evidence has been demonstrated of the link between this teratogenic flavivirus and microcephaly cases. A mechanistically unique functionalization strategy for a benzylic C(sp(3))-H bond has been developed based on the facile oxidation event of indole substrates. This novel pathway was initiated by efficient radical generation at the benzylic position of the substrate, with subsequent transition metal catalysis to complete the overall transformation. Ultimately, an aryl or an acyl group could be effectively delivered from an aryl (pseudo)halide or an acid anhydride coupling partner, respectively. The developed method utilizes mild conditions and exhibits a wide substrate scope for both substituted indoles and C(sp(2))-based reaction counterparts. Mechanistic studies have shown that competitive hydrogen atom transfer (HAT) processes, which are frequently encountered in conventional methods, are not involved in the product formation process of the developed strategy.

A polystyrene-immobilized isothiourea has been applied to the enantioselective acylative kinetic resolution (KR) of monoacylated BINOL(s) with inexpensive isobutyric anhydride in batch and flow. The role of inflammation in cancer generation is gaining importance in the field of cancer research. The chemo-anti-inflammatory strategy that involves using non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug compounds as effective anti-tumor agents is being acceded globally. In the present study, seven new Pt (IV) complexes based on cisplatin, carboplatin and oxaliplatin scaffold bearing the anti-inflammatory drug naproxen in the axial position were synthesized and characterized by elemental analysis, ESI-MS, Fourier transform-infrared, H-1- and Pt-195-NMR spectroscopy. The reduction behavior in the presence of ascorbic acid was studied using high-performance liquid chromatography. The cytotoxicity against two human breast cell lines and the anti-inflammatory properties were evaluated. All the complexes are able to promote a comparable activity, with average three- and 13-fold more cytotoxic than cisplatin against MCF7 and MDA-MB-231 cell lines, respectively. The complexes show remarkable anti-inflammatory effects, which indicated their potential in treating cancer associated with inflammation and reducing side-effects of chemotherapy.

Self-assembling peptides and oligonucleotides have given rise to synthetic materials with several applications in nanotechnology. Aggregation of synthetic oligosaccharides into well-defined architectures has not been reported even though natural polysaccharides, such as cellulose and chitin, are key structural components of biomaterials. Here, we report that six synthetic oligosaccharides, ranging from dimers to hexamers, self-assemble into nanostructures of varying morphologies and emit within the visible spectrum in an excitation-dependent manner. Well-defined differences in chain length, monomer modification, and aggregation methods yield glycomaterials with distinct shapes and properties. The excitation-dependent fluorescence in a broad range within the visible spectrum illustrates their potential for use in optical devices and imaging applications. We anticipate that our systematic approach of studying well-defined synthetic oligosaccharides will form the foundation of our understanding of carbohydrate interactions in nature.

A simple and efficient methodology for Friedel-Crafts acylation of 3-methylindole using Amberlyst 15 resin as catalyst is described. This methodology shows good selectivity towards the formation of the products of 2-acylation, (3-methyl-1H-indol-2-yl)ketones. Several advantages can be ascribed to Amberlyst 15, among them; are the ease of handling, quick separation from the reaction mixture and minimum or no production of the chemical residues that must be eliminated. Besides, the catalyst can be easily recycled and reused with a minimal loss in activity through 6 reaction cycles. The catalyst was characterized by FT-IR spectroscopy and superficial acidity.

The photoredox chloroacylation of alkenes has been developed as a substitute for the Friedel-Crafts acylation of alkenes to beta-chloroketones.
